What I have noticed though, looking at some of the images of British athletes over previous Games, is that Britain, up until Seoul '88 used to compete in an all white kit with two bands around the chest, one red and one blue.. Those early editions included more than 200 on-the-whistle match reports from leagues up and down the country. The copy was sometimes filed from the clubhouse bar by the slightly inebriated groundsman, but when it hit the shelves the following morning, you wouldn’t have known it.

Board firmly announced her arrival onto the international scene when, still aged only 18, she won the 400 m race in a Commonwealth v USA match in Los Angeles, California on 9 July 1967. She came from last to first with a stunning late surge and won in a time of 52.8 seconds, the second fastest ever recorded by a European woman. The race was broadcast live on British television and made her into a household name. Winning in such style at the biggest meeting of year was clearly a turning point in her career. [11]As a recently retired athlete, Hemery was free to participate in the professional Superstars contests and keep any prize money he won – unlike many other competitors (like Kjell Isaksson or Andy Ripley). Noticing the very high standard of competition within a short time of the event starting, Hemery created his own training regime, becoming adept at the gymnasium tests and canoeing and propelling himself into national fame. David was also a long-time supporter of the Sports Journalists’ Association, serving on the committee and taking over the chairman’s role for two years in 1986. He was an ever-present at every event we staged and often the person with the biggest crowd around them in the pub after all the formalities had wrapped. One giant of sports journalism pays a wonderful tribute to another. Pat Collins on Jim Lawton… very special from our president @collinspatk1 https://t.co/CMVxkjhaUU #RipJim

I can remember Lilian Board, a lovely girl (a twin I believe). She was engaged to a journalist David Emery (may have that wrong) and I can remember the battle to save her life culminating in a stay in a clinic abroad and some revolutionary treatment that was all for naught. Awful to see the last photos of her in the papers. Mel Watman, (2006). All-time Greats of British Athletics, (pp.103–106), Sportsbooks Ltd.,( ISBN 1899807446) After leaving the Express, he launched Sport First in March 1998, billed as Britain’s answer to L’Equipe and La Gazzetta dello Sport. That letter was especially poignant for me because my father died unexpectedly aged 67 just a week later and somehow working with David – such a charismatic figure – became all the more important to me. I hung on to his every word, as did many others. He was the biggest influence on so many Fleet Street careers. He convinced me that journalism might not make me a millionaire but that sometimes you could live like one,’’ says Bob. “Emers had style. You never wanted to let him down.’’ I demurred. The Olympics were really close to my heart. Let’s not debase the great event before it starts, I counselled. Let’s just enjoy the spectacle.

It won acclaim everywhere. It also earned him his first Sports Writer of the Year award. I suspect he rang Linda from Seoul that night. There has been some talk about women's sportswear in the modern era. I'm not worried that Jess Ennis-Hill wears a bikini. If she's comfortable in it and it gives her freedom of movement to enhance her performance then all good, I say.The following year, 1962, she began competing in the long jump and after training through that winter, improved markedly as both a sprinter and long jumper. [4] Of all the brilliant journalists and scintillating personalities Jim Lawton encountered in his glittering career, none had a deeper impact on his literary offerings than his wife Linda. Imagine the tremor in my voice the next afternoon when I called David to tell him Agassi was two sets down in his first round match and looking like he was headed home. Later he told me, he batted away the sarcasm of other department executives in evening conference by insisting Agassi would become a star… one day. A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We were called to reports of a medical emergency. One ambulance and a paramedic officer attended the scene.
