At this strength, acetic acid is mildly antiseptic, with broad spectrum activity against streptococci, staphylococci, pseudomonas, enterococci, etc. ml of extract (as liquid extract) from Squillbulb (Drimia maritima (L.) Gargle with 10 ml (2 x 5 ml spoonfuls) mixed with an equal amount of water, then spit out,every hour. Also swallow slowly 1 x 5 ml spoonfulundiluted, 3 times daily. Shake the bottle before use. A slight deposit sometimes appears on standing. This will disappearon shaking. Although aimed mainly at theatrical performers, Sanderson’s Throat Specific Mixture has attracted a reputation beyond the world of entertainment — at least in Mr Sanderson’s Manchester, where I was raised. When I developed a sore throat as a young child my father persuaded me to gargle with the concoction. Decades later, I am still traumatised by the experience, which involved a burning sensation in my throat followed by extremely unpleasant bitter and sour tastes. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFOREYOU TAKE SANDERSON'S MIXTURE ml of Capsicum Tincture (Capsicumannuum L. var. minimum (Miller) Heiser),corresponding to 7.5 to 12.5 microgramscapsaicinoids calculated as capsaicin. Extractionsolvent: ethanol 90% v/v. Another Sanderson’s component is capsicum, with 5ml of the mixture containing 0.025ml of capsicum tincture. Capsicum has long been used in gargles for throat irritation or infection, although it seems that it has never been evaluated comprehensively for effectiveness or safety.If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. This includes any possible side effectsnot listed in this leaflet. See section 4. Sanderson's Mixture contains alcohol, but the amount is unlikely to cause drowsiness or affectyour ability to drive and use machines. Howeverplease ensure that you are not affected before youdrive or operate machinery. Each 5 ml contains 62.66 mg of ethanol (see section 4.4 ‚Special warnings and precautions for use‘). Do not use for more than 7 consecutive days. If symptoms worsen or persist beyond 7 days,consult your doctor. The current supply problem derives from a shortage of quassia wood, even though the Sanderson’s formulation contains just a tiny 0.0078ml of quassia liquid extract in each 5ml dose. Quassia has long been used as a bitter tonic. It supposedly has antibacterial and antifungal properties, although clinical trials have failed to prove its efficacy.
