[PubMed Abstract] Sucralose and gut health. Your gastrointestinal tract (GI), or microbiome, is home to lots of different kinds of helpful bacteria. These bacteria help your body to maintain a healthy immune system. Some studies have shown that sucralose can change your gut microbiome by lowering the number of good bacteria by half.

[PubMed Abstract]

Artificial sweeteners are chemically synthesized substances that are used instead of sucrose (table sugar) to sweeten foods and beverages. One study including 128 people with type 2 diabetes found that consuming the artificial sweetener sucralose ( Splenda) did not affect blood sugar levels ( 15). Headaches: One study confirmed that individuals with self-reported headaches after the ingestion of aspartame were in deed susceptible to headaches due to aspartame. Three randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled studies with more than 200 adult migraine sufferers showed that headaches were more frequent and more severe in the aspartame-treated group. This highly processed and purified product is around 300 times sweeter than table sugar, which means a person needs to use only a small amount to sweeten food. Saccharin is often used in baked goods, jams, jelly, chewing gum, canned fruit, candy, dessert toppings, and salad dressings.Acesulfame potassium is used with other artificial sweeteners and may be found in sugar-free sodas. It is marketed as Sunett or Sweet One, and can be found in your local grocery store. Heuberger R. Overview of non-nutritive sweeteners. https://www.uptodate.com/contents/search. Accessed Nov. 11, 2022. Other evidence suggests that artificial sweeteners do reduce weight gain. In a large controlled trial with more than 600 juvenile participants, results showed less weight gain over 18 months when children consumed drinks sweetened artificially, compar The FDA's guidelines on the use of saccharin for beverages are not to exceed 12 mg/fluid ounce, and in processed food, the amount is not to exceed 30 mg per serving. The acceptable daily intake (ADI) for saccharin is 5 mg/kg of body weight. To determine your ADI, divide your weight in pounds by 2.2 and then multiply it by 5. For example, if you weighed 180 lbs., your weight in kg would be 82 (180 divided by 2.2) and your ADI for saccharin would be 410 mg (5 x 82). Saccharin is used in tabletop sweeteners, baked goods, jams, chewing gum, canned fruit, candy, dessert toppings, and salad dressings. It also is used in cosmetic products, vitamins, and pharmaceuticals. The FDA allows product-makers to use sugar alcohols, such as sorbitol and xylitol, too. The agency doesn't consider sugar alcohols to be food additives.
