About this deal

Larvae: Vine weevil grubs can be controlled by watering into compost or soil a suspension of pathogenic nematodes. For best results nematodes need to be used in a well-drained potting compost or light soil, which must be moist. Treatment in August to early September should control vine weevil grubs before they are large enough to cause serious damage to plant roots. They arrive in a sachet suspended in a paste. It is best to use them straight away, however, you can store them in the fridge for up to a few weeks (do not freeze). Consider environmental impact: Minimize the environmental impact of insecticide use by following best practices. Avoid applying insecticides near water sources, such as ponds or streams, as they can pose a risk to aquatic life. Additionally, be mindful of neighbouring plants, including flowers and ornamentals, to prevent unintended damage. First, I would find an area of the lawn that looks damaged, an unusual bare or brown patch, for example. Next, I would do a classic pull test; healthy grass will have strong roots and won’t be easy to pull up. I’ve found that diseased or damaged grass will have weak roots that give way easily. They dwell in the soil, where they feed voraciously on the tender grassroots of your turf, gradually growing in size and strength.

Let’s explore some chemical measures that can aid in controlling these persistent pests and restoring the health of your turf. Nematodes

With the feeder in an upright position, apply evenly to half of the area using a side-to-side motion. Application will take approximately 8 minutes under typical water pressure conditions.

Treat the same 100 sqm area again for a further 16 minutes to apply the remaining nematodes as well as to make sure they are adequately watered in. The nematodes come complete with instructions and can be applied using a watering can with a rose with large holes or nematode applicator. You just apply to moist soil when the soil temperature is above 10ºC (50ºF) and ensure the soil does not dry out for at least two weeks after applying the nematodes. Nematodes are capable of surviving the odd frost, so don't worry if the temperature falls after you have applied them. Other steps that I’ve found can help are; reduce your watering regimen during the autumn, mow the lawn frequently, dethatch and collect grass cuttings. Garlic Spray: A bitter-tasting spray on the grass will discourage the grubs from eating the grass an they will wriggle away. Hopefully to be caught by birds or swept up off your patio. I have a professional organic garlic spray which I can apply to customers lawns, or you could try to make some yourself by soaking crushed cloves in boiling water overnight.Chafer grubs. If your lawn has yellow patches and looks like it has been dug up, chances are you have chafer grubs. The damage comes from the birds, foxes and badgers who dig for these tasty morsels. The grubs can be controlled by the nematode Heterorhabitis bacteriophora, one of the oldest known and best of the insect parasitic nematodes. It is best to deal with the young grubs in August and early September. Their feeding frenzy can leave unsightly patches, weakening the overall health and aesthetic appeal of your once-vibrant lawn. Predatory gall midge, Feltiella acarisuga. The 2mm long pale yellow maggots of this midge can find small hidden populations of red spider mite and when available can be used early and late in the season.

Prepare your turf for application: Before applying nematodes, ensure that your lawn is moist. Lightly water the area a day or two before the planned application to provide a suitable environment for the nematodes to move through the soil and reach the target larvae effectively. If adult insects are present, their eggs will be hatching soon. Again, you may have to make repeat applications. The nematodes then reproduce inside the dead pest and release a new generation of hungry infective nematodes, which disperse and search for further prey. Mix nematodes with water: Follow the instructions provided by the nematode manufacturer to properly mix the nematodes with water. Typically, you will dilute the nematodes in a watering can or a sprayer according to the specified ratio. These plump larvae typically measure between 1 to 2 inches in length, sporting a cylindrical body with a smooth, shiny texture.
