Induction of apoptosis by increasing the expression of p53 and Bax and simultaneously decreasing the expression of Bcl-2In the past, red hair has been wrongly believed to be a characteristic associated exclusively or significantly with Jews, due to the belief that Judas Iscariot had red hair. [20] In medieval Germany, some believed a tribe of Rote Juden, or " Red Jews", inhabited the Caucasus Mountains. [20] According to myth, this was a reclusive tribe of Jews with red hair conspiring with the Antichrist to destroy Christianity. [20] It has been hypothesized that this belief may have originated in the fragment of a social memory of the Khazars who, according to some sources, had a high prevalence of red hair and blue eyes. [21] Apoptosis, or programmed cell death, evolved as a rapid and irreversible process to efficiently eliminate dysfunctional cells [ 31]. Apoptosis is usually executed in two ways: Mitochondria-mediated intrinsic pathway and death receptor-mediated extrinsic route. In this process are involved cysteine-aspartate proteases (caspases) and the Bcl-2 family proteins (e.g., Bax, Bcl-2) [ 29, 32]. Moreover, it is well known that in pathological conditions such as cancer, alterations/mutations in the p53 gene are one of the main causes of apoptosis changes [ 33]. As matter of fact, studies effected by Pashaei-Asl et al. showed that the treatment of ovarian cancer cell line SKOV-3 with ginger extract for 48 h caused the decrease of Bcl-2 gene expression, and the subsequent p53-induced apoptosis [ 45]. In another study, depolarization of the mitochondrial membrane and its potential subsequent deterioration (ΔΨm) were observed after 6-gingerol administration within the human gastric adenocarcinoma cell line (AGS) [ 8]. Interestingly, disruption of the mitochondrial permeability through the transition pore with decrease in ΔΨm is one of the pivotal events in cell response to apoptotic stimuli [ 34]. Mitochondria-mediated apoptosis in 6-gingerol-treated AGS cells was followed by cytochrome c release, elevation in the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio, and activation of caspases-3 and -9 [ 8]. Aqueous extract of ginger (GAE) induced cellular apoptosis and disrupted cellular interphase microtubules also within human non-small lung epithelium cancer (NSCLC) A549 cell lines, by increasing the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio and activating the mitochondrial death cascade [ 46]. In addition, 6-shogaol induced apoptosis in hepatocarcinoma cell lines (Hep-2) by loss of cell viability, enhanced ROS production, lipid peroxidation resulted in altered mitochondrial membrane potential, and increased DNA damage [ 15]. In particular, the prooxidant role of 6-shogaol seemed to inhibit Bcl-2 expression accompanied by an up-regulation of Bax, cytochrome c, released by altered mitochondria, and caspases-3 and -9 activation [ 15]. Similarly, β-Elemene, another extract from the ginger plant, triggered apoptosis in NSCLC through the cytochrome-c mitochondrial release, mediating the intrinsic apoptotic pathway [ 47]. Furthermore, torch ginger ( Etlingera elatior, EE) induced caspase-independent cell death in mouse B16 melanoma cells through the inhibition of the ERK1/2, p38, and Akt signaling pathway [ 37]. In fact, it is well-known that the PI3K/Akt, ERK1/2, and p38 MAPK signaling pathways are crucial in the context of DNA-damaging drug-induced apoptosis [ 38]. Terpenoids present in the Steam Distilled Extract of Ginger (SDGE) induced apoptosis in endometrial cancer cells (ECC-1 and Ishikawa cell lines) at IC50 of 1.25 µg/mL by increasing the expression of p53 and Bax and simultaneously decreasing the expression of Bcl-2 by 90% [ 48]. a b Frost, Peter (2017). A very important fact is that there are some results of in vivo experiments confirming the positive role of ginger derivatives in apoptosis induction within cancer. In this setting, oral squamous cell carcinoma induced by painting with 0.5% 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene-induced (DMBA-induced) in hamster buccal pouch (HBP) (male golden Syrian hamsters) evidenced over-expression of the mutant form of p53 and Bcl-2 coupled with decreased expression of wild type p53 and Bax [ 17, 50]. Oral treatment with 6-shogaol (at 20 mg/kg of body weight) showed significantly decreased tumor volume and tumor burden, restored wild-type p53 function, and activation of apoptotic stimuli [ 17]. The gene that produces red hair is recessive, which is why it's so rare. But people can carry and pass on the redhead gene without actually being redheads themselves. A redhead whose partner does not have the ginger gene themselves will not have a redheaded child - it’s biologically impossible. However a redhead whose partner is not ginger but nevertheless carries the ginger gene has 50% chance that their child will be ginger. Two non ginger parents who both carry the recessive gene have a one in four chance of having a red haired child. But if two redheads have a baby together their child will always be ginger. We get that ginger hair can look golden, so we can see what medieval author Theophilus Presbyter may have been thinking. Additionally, the studies reported the effects of combined treatment (ginger and gelam honey), which downregulate the gene expressions of Akt, mTOR, Raptor, Rictor, β-catenin, Gsk3β, Tcf4, and cyclin D1 while cytochrome C and caspase 3 genes were shown to be upregulated in HT29 colon cancer cells [ 103]. Furthermore, an extract mixture of turmeric, ginger, and garlic induced apoptosis in MCF-7 and ZR-75 breast cancer cell lines [ 104]. A combined treatment with NE mix-tamoxifen caused the extension of apoptosis indicating a potential role of the NE mix in sensitizing the ER-positive breast cancer cells towards tamoxifen. Moreover, a combined treatment with NE mix-tamoxifen altered the expression of apoptotic markers (p53 and Caspase 9) leading to apoptosis in breast cancer cell lines. Any comedian will tell you that some of the funniest jokes they’ve ever told have had a layer or two of controversy. When it comes to ginger jokes, the division is obvious, as the name discloses the jokes. We hope that this article of ginger jokes will be helpful whenever you need it most. Ginger jokes are common and widely accepted as hilarious. In 2010, several ads in Australia centered around ridiculing people with red hair. [17] One, a government road safety campaign, suggested that using a mobile phone while driving might cause unwanted side effects such as sexual intercourse between two people with red hair, an occurrence which might result in the offspring also having red hair. [17] Another, for ANZ Bank, featured a character of a bank clerk who was comically rude towards customers. [17] Canada [ edit ] Cryos International, one of the world's largest sperm banks, said in 2011 that they had too many sperm doses from red-haired individuals, but agency director Ole Schou said that they "have nothing against red-haired donors". [32] Naturally occurring red hair appears in a small minority of humans and is the rarest natural hair color, occurring in 0.6 percent of people. [2] A smaller percentage of humans, approximately 0.17 percent or 13 million, have a combination of red hair and blue eyes. [3] The redhead pressed her finger against her left breast and screamed, then pressed her elbow and screamed even louder. She cried when she pushed her knee and screamed as she pushed her ankle. She screamed everything she touched.

Redheads, for some reason, are more likely to be left-handed! Look at a group of them and see all the southpaws. I’m sorry that you went though what you did because of your hair, Malachai. And as redheads, as much as we try to lay low and not be noticed when bullies come around, we just can’t hide, can we? Our hair always gives us away! Another option is to blend your ginger into a paste. Put the root in a food processor and, as long as you blitz up a sufficient quantity, the root itself should hold enough water, no need to add any more. Then use what you need in your recipe and pop the remainder into an ice cube tray and freeze. Can you freeze ginger? NF-κB, as well as IL-8, plays an important role in tumorigenesis, given its ability to control the expression and function of numerous genes involved in cell proliferation, sustained angiogenesis, and evasion from apoptosis. Different tumor types, including ovarian cancer, have been shown to express high constitutive NF-κB activity [ 75]. It was shown that 6-gingerol treatment of cultured ovarian cancer cells induced serious growth suppression by inhibiting NF-kB activation and decreasing the VEGF and IL-8 secretion [ 10]. This umbrella review identified a convincing body of evidence that, in humans, ginger conferred analgesic, metabolic, and gastrointestinal therapeutic effects on a range of health conditions. The strongest evidence for therapeutic effects, with high certainty of the evidence (GRADE level: high) and very large effect size, was found for the antiemetic effects of ginger in pregnant women (1.0–2.5 g/d for 4–21 d). These findings were clinically meaningful; for example, evident by women consuming ginger being 7.5 times less likely to experience nausea than those who received placebo. Great confidence in the analgesic effects of ginger in populations with osteoarthritis was also found (0.5–1.0 g/d for 3–12 wk; GRADE level: high). Despite the effect size being small, clinical significance is suggested due to similar standardized mean differences in the treatment effect being observed with NSAIDs, which are a standard treatment for osteoarthritic pain ( 54). There was moderate confidence (GRADE level: moderate) in a large to very large estimated effect of ginger for glycemic control (0.05–3 g/d for 2–3 mo; GRADE level: moderate). These results were also clinically meaningful; for example, the 1% decrease in HbA1c observed in this review improves diabetes outcomes, where each 1% increase in HbA1c is associated with a 30% increase in all-cause mortality and 40% increase in cardiovascular disease mortality. Furthermore, ginger had a medium to large effect on some blood pressure, weight management, dysmenorrhea, postoperative nausea, and chemotherapy-induced vomiting outcomes, but the certainty in these effects was mostly low to moderate (0.02–3.0 g/d for 3 d to 3 mo; GRADE level: low to moderate). A statistically significant small effect of ginger was found on blood lipid profile; however, there was very low confidence in this effect (0.005–3.0 g/d for 2–3 mo; GRADE level: very low). It remains uncertain whether the health benefits of ginger were conferred, at least in part, due to anti-inflammatory and antioxidant behavior, as meta-analyses showed ginger improved CRP, TNF-α, sICAM, MDA, and TAC but there was very serious inconsistency and/or imprecision in these findings (GRADE level: very low to moderate). The term "ginger" is considered by some to be pejorative or offensive, with some considering it only acceptable when used by a person with red hair to refer to themselves or others with red hair. [19] [22] [47] [48] The use of the term to refer to persons with red hair may be a reference to the spicy ginger root, an amplification of the stereotype that persons with red hair have abrupt tempers or are prone to violence. PMID 23860522.Also, recent research demonstrated that the human pancreatic cancer (Panc-1) cell line treated with the extract of Syussai ginger (SSHE) revealed several features that were not observed in classical-type autophagy, including nuclear shrinkage, focal membrane rupture, electron dense mitochondria, empty vacuoles, and focal perinuclear swelling [ 58]. It appeared that these morphological features coincided well with the recently discovered form of cell death, “autosis”, which is a Na + and K + -ATPase-regulated form of cell death [ 23]. SSHE markedly increased the LC3-II/LC3-I ratio, decreased SQSTM1/p62 protein, and enhanced vacuolization of the cytoplasm in Panc-1 cells. So, SSHE inhibited cell proliferation and subsequently induced the autotic death of pancreatic cancer Panc-1 cells. Evidently, jokes thrive more when there’s a sense of controversy surrounding the subject of the joke. Regardless, isn’t life too short for a conservative sense of humor?
