About this deal

Sophie’s Snail: This is the very first story in which Sophie finds a small yellow snail, announces her intention to be a lady farmer and meets Great Aunt Al for the first time. She also has a disastrous playdatewith Dawn and fills the potting shed with a menagerie of woodlice, earwigs and centipedes. Overall, though, this is a cute story with fun illustrations about overcoming shyness and fear with the help of friends. It might be a good choice for shy kids who are just starting out at school as a tool for reassurance. Sophie is a curious smart little snail who has a lot of BIG questions to ponder. She adores learning new things which just leads to more questions. Sophie's Shell is about a little snail named Sophie who starts school and must face her newfound shyness with the help of a friend.

Four and a half stars for this delightful little story of a girl who knows what she wants, if not how to get it. She also knows what she doesn't want, and won't put up with. Sophie is older than her age, but that's not unusual for the only girl (and one who is not a spoiled princess), used to holding her own against older brothers. Her relationship with the animals she loves, particularly the snail, is charming without being sweetie-sweet, and the illustrations depict real children doing real things. The artist catches not only their features but their feelings in a way that made me laugh with recognition. These stories are perfect for children of infant school age, they will identify with so many of Sophie’s experiences and the everyday dramas in herschool and family life. The books are also available on CD, they would be brilliant to listen toona long car or plane journey. As a teacher I can also imagine reading the stories to Reception / Year One classes. Renata’s wren encounter proves magical, one most children could only wish to experience outside of this lovely story.

Matthew and Mark – Sophie's identical twin brothers. Two years older than Sophie, they are practically indistinguishable in appearance to outsiders. They also speak and act very similarly, often saying the same things at the same time, though they don't always dress identically ('Sophie's Snail'). They love making visitors guess which twin is which, lying if the visitor correctly identifies them ('Sophie's Snail'). At times they can be quite disparaging of Sophie, running off and leaving her alone at times despite their parents' instructions to include her in their games, and initially telling her that she cannot be a farmer since 'farmers are men' ('Sophie's Snail'). Nevertheless, they are loyal and supportive of her in important or difficult situations. They give her a tractor and trailer for her birthday and Christmas combined in support of her aspirations, and call Dawn a 'beastly girl' for squashing one of Sophie's woodlice in 'Sophie's Snail'. They take time out from their football to watch and support her and Andrew practicing for the three-legged race in 'Sophie Hits Six', and describe her as having been 'brilliant' in her role as the Pied Piper in 'Sophie is Seven'. Their catchphrase involves Matthew saying "I know!" and Mark saying "I know what you're going to say!" in various situations, to which other family members sometimes interject with '...And so do I,' usually with disapproval or resignation. They are very sporty, are fast runners, and are often seen to be playing football.

Dolly – Tomboy's only daughter; a tortoiseshell cat. When Tomboy has her four kittens Sophie hopes they are all girls and calls them Molly, Polly, Dolly and Holly in the hope that they themselves will grow up and have more kittens. However, when a 'large, tall lady' (later revealed to be Meg Morris - the owner of the local riding stables) visits with the intent of buying one of the kittens, she tells Sophie that all the kittens are boys except for Dolly, whom she buys. A couple of years later, when Sophie and her mother visit the stables to ask about riding lessons, Dolly is shown to remember Sophie; she runs straight up to her and rubs against her legs, which causes the stable owner to remember Sophie as well. Sophie is a very determined, very independent little girl who is mad about animals and dreams of being a lady farmer when she grows up. She lives with her mother, father and older twin brothers Mark and Matthew. The stories also introduce herclassmatesDawn (not herfavourite person!), Duncan and Andrew and herbeloved Great Aunt Al who lives in the Highlands of Scotland. A home-renovation project is interrupted by a family of wrens, allowing a young girl an up-close glimpse of nature. This article needs additional citations for verification. Unsourced material may be challenged and removed. We’ve now read and enjoyed the other three stories and my daughter is very disappointed to hear thatwe have now read them all! In addition to appearing in print, all six books have been recorded undramatised and unabridged, read by Bernard Cribbins, and have been subsequently released both as Cassette tapes and CDs.

Sophie finally meets her match, another snail named Stanely, who confesses to her that sometimes he feels shy too. Together they support and encourage each other to come out of their shells and to interact with the other classmates and their world around them. They both gain confidence and happiness as they relax, have fun and make new friends. Beano – Sophie's second pet; a large albino rabbit who is a present from Aunt Al in return for Tomboy's kitten, Ollie. Sophie wonders what to call her new rabbit, and when she learns from Aunt Al that he has pink eyes because he is Albino, she settles for 'Beano' on the grounds that they already have an 'Al' in the family ('Sophie Hits Six').My daughter received three Sophie stories as a Christmas present last year and once we started reading we couldn’t put them down, they areso entertaining and funny. The books were first published in the early nineties but I had never heard of them before. These versions, illustrated by Hannah Shaw, were published in 2015 and we definitely wantto read the other three stories. Sophie Hits Six: Tom (who has been renamed Tomboy) is now part of the family and Sophie needs to find homes for all herkittens. At school she makes a new friend, Andrew, and isdelighted when she receivesan invitation to teaon his father’s farm. Great Aunt Al comes to visit and brings a surprise for Sophie, she takes part in both her first Sports Day and first Nativity Play, goes to an agricultural show and there’s a special present for the family on Christmas Day.
