About this deal

Soon enough, there was enough demand for their premium expression that they decided to put it to market. They created the Cardenal Mendoza brand, and the rest is history. The expression is matured in sherry casks for at least 15 years, on average. This is much more than the minimum required for brandy and it ensures a quality drink with many amazing and balanced flavors. The Best Spanish Grape Brandy/Brandy de Jerez went to Cardinal Mendoza Solera Gran Reserva produced by Bodega Sánchez Romate Hermanos in Jerez. Chateau de Laubade is a historic estate that has producing Armagnac since the late 19th century. On the nose, the Armagnac exhibits aromas of rich, fatty bacon, along with notes of creamy custard, floral potpourri, cinnamon and roasted nuts. There are dried dark fruit notes, especially some prune, and some new saddle leather. Both characteristics are typical, especially of aged Armagnac.

This is similar to the Scotch whisky industry’s preoccupation a generation ago with kilts and bagpipes in marketing Scotch whisky. Spain’s brandy producers need to market their product to appeal to a more cosmopolitan buyer, while still preserving its essential Spanish character. This is a complex, layered aromatic brandy that offers up aromas of dried fruit, caramel, chocolate and hints of coffee bean. On the palate, there are flavors of dried red and stone fruit, along with marzipan and candied orange zest.

The finish is long and smooth, with baked apple notes, along with sweet dried fruit and a lingering vanilla note. This one keeps things nice and simple while still offering up some amazing, punchy flavor. If you have a favorite Spanish brandy, use that one for this recipe. It’s a drink that brings out the many flavors of your brandy, so you need to make sure it’s one you like. Combine it with a hard cider you already like and you’ve got a golden combination! As mentioned above, Lepanto Brandies are the only Brandy de Jerez made from 100% Palomino grapes grown in the Jerez regions. After vinification the wine is then double distilled in two Armagnac ‘Charentais’ or “pot” stills, which produce a fuller, richer spirit than column stills. Only thecentral part or heart of the alcohol spirit produced, discarding the heads and tails known as Holanda, is used. This is the purest and bes quality spirit. All cognac is brandy, but not all brandies are cognacs. The aged brandy known as cognac is produced from grapes grown in the Cognac region of France, where brandy has an illustrious history. There, the grape varieties and growing areas, the minimum 30 months of aging, the French oak barrels, copper pot stills, and the winter distillation are all strictly enforced. The brandy is aged in ex-cherry barrels for about five years and has spent some time with the title of best-selling brandy in the UK! An aromatic brandy that has been aged for 10 to 12 years in butts that previously held Oloroso sherry. It offers notes of prunes, raisins and dates, along with hints of roasted nuts and old leather. The brandy is smooth, with a pronounced palate weight, with flavors of dried fruit, caramel and vanilla. There is also an 18 YO XO expression that is finished in sweet PX sherry cask and a 20 YO Oro expression matured in dry, Palo Cortado sherry casks. On the palate, it’s heavy and creamy, with a pronounced palate weight and a mouth coating oiliness. It offers up flavors of baked apple and caramel apple, along with a bit of cherry syrup and some cinnamon, as well as roasted nuts and dried fruit. The finish is long, semi-sweet, with lingering dried fruit notes. Lepanto is the only brandy distilled entirely in pot stills and the only one actually distilled in Jerez

Torres is based in Penedès, in Catalonia. The Hors D’Age is an ultra-aged brandy, averaging 20+ years. It is based on Parellada and Ugni blanc grapes and is matured in French Limousine oak barrels. This is the most Cognac-like of the Spanish brandies, and far better priced. The brandy has a deep, rich color, offering notes of fresh grapes and ripe pears, along with raisins, dates and figs. There are additional notes of candied citrus, caramel, vanilla, cinnamon and other wood spices. The Torres 20 has won more than 69 awards in international competitions. the standard Lepanto Solera Gran Reserva which is finished in sweet Oloroso casks (which held Matusalem sherry) Spanish brandy sales don’t have much traction outside of Spain and a handful of export markets in former Spanish possessions. In the US, it has a small but dedicated following. That’s unfortunate, because it really is an excellent product.Pot still produced spirit must have an alcohol content (ABV) of between 40% and 70%. This spirit is known in the brandy trade as “holandas.” It is only distilled once, although there are a few producers who double distill. The Best Cognac Extra Aged/Vintage Category was won by Gautier for its Tradition Rare Vieille Reserve Cognac. The spirits are matured for a minimum of 12 years in Fino sherry casks (ex-Tio Pepe) in a traditional solera system. Recent bottles seem to mention the age on the label but on my bottle this wasn’t the case. Keep in mind that there is a version at 36% ABV and another one at 40% ABV. I guess this is specific to the market you’re in and due to legal requirements or commercial strategy (same thing happens with their entry-level brandy Soberano). Fruit for brandy is fermented into a wine, which is then distilled to produce a spirit. For aged brandy, the distillate is rested in oak barrels, and several barrels’ contents are blended together to create the final product.

The Best Apple Brandy Category went to Ocean Hill, Apple Brandy produced by Sadden Brothers & Co Distilling Co. The Ocean Hill Apple Brandy is a non-chill filtered apple brandy, double-distilled and bottled in Ocean Hill, Brooklyn from apples grown in the Hudson Valley. The apples are pressed and fermented, using a proprietary yeast blend, at a cider mill on Long Island. They’re matured in oak casks that previously held malt whisky. Brandy bodegas in Jerez are required to utilize a solera system of fractional blending. The solera consists of a series of barrels called criaderas (nurseries in Spanish). Each criadera is numbered. It can consist of one to hundreds of barrels. All the barrels in a criadera hold brandy of the same average age. A bodega may have anywhere from three to as many as 45 different criaderas. The oldest criadera is called the solera. These are the barrels from which the brandy destined for bottling is extracted. The profile offers an interesting mix of things, beginning with strong notes of toffee and roasted coffee on the nose. The palate opens with cashews, caramel, and marzipan that come together in a chewy, rich texture. Mid-palate brings pears, orange rinds, cinnamon, and a touch of tobacco and cigar. This leads into a mildly spicy finish. 4. Torres 30 Brandy ReservaThe brandy is intensely flavored, exhibiting floral aromas along with ripe apple and pears, as well as fresh apple cider, licorice, roasted nuts, vanilla and dried fruit notes of fig. On the palate, there are flavors of anise/licorice, apple, pear and apricot, along with wood and vanilla notes. The apple brandy is smooth and creamy. On the nose, there is an intense sherry cask aroma of raisin, prune and sweet almond. The palate features a pronounced weight with dried fruit, along with some coffee notes, orange zest and cinnamon. The finish, which is very rich and satiny smooth, emphasizes sweet almond notes, with a hint of bitterness on the end. Mouth: very smooth, slightly sweeter than expected. Still a light (now slightly syrupy) fruitiness with more pronounced vanilla. Golden raisins, almonds and honey again. Hints of praline and latte in the end. Medium length, raisiny finish. Lepanto Px Solera Gran Reserva is a premium, well-aged brandy, spending 12 years in sherry oak casks, followed by three years in casks that were previously used to age sweet Pedro Zimenez. The company is owned by the Gonzalez family. Located in Jerez, they’ve been involved in the industry since 1835, primarily as one of the best and most well-known sherry wineries across the globe.
