Radio 1 DJs Vernon Kay and Sarah Cox hail from the town and makers of the game are impressed with the way they promote their roots. Former UK Monopoly champion Ken Jones, 57, from Bolton, said: "I am already looking forward to Passing GO and buying up the Reebok."

The game will be played in exactly the same way as the original with the difference that Bolton, Wigan or Preston landmarks and street names would replace classic London locations such as Mayfair, Park Lane, Old Kent Road and Leicester Square. The rivals will fight it out in competition including an internet vote and a score based on how well their respective football teams have fared at the end of the season.
