About this deal

The Hellraiserseries has a history that is unlike most long running horror franchises. Originally released in the late 1980s, when the slasher genre reigned supreme and audiences had been fed a steady diet of movies like Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and Halloween, Hellraisercame along and did something completely different. The Beauty of Suffering – brand new featurette exploring the Cenobites’ connection to goth, fetish cultures and Bdsm Hell Was What They Wanted! - appreciation of Hellbound, the Hellraiser mythos and the work of Clive Barker by horror authors George Daniel Lea (Born in Blood) and Kit Power (The Finite) – NEW (85 mins) Books of Blood and Beyond: The Literary Works of Clive Barker – archival appreciation by horror author David Gatwalk of Barker’s written work, from The Books of Blood to The Scarlet Gospels

Hell Was What They Wanted!, a brand new 80-minute appreciation of Hellbound, the Hellraiser mythos and the work of Clive Barker by horror authors George Daniel Lea (Born in Blood) and Kit Power (The Finite) Newly uncovered extended EPK interviews with Clive Barker and stars Andrew Robinson, Clare Higgins, Ashley Laurence, and effects artist Bob Keen, shot during the making of Hellraiser, with a new introduction by Stephen Jones and Kim NewmanNice upgrade over the previous Arrow boxset, which was pretty grain heavy in particular indoor scenes. That Rat-Slice Sound - brand new appreciation of composer Christopher Young’s scores for Hellraiser and Hellbound: Hellraiser Ii by Guy Adams Flesh is a Trap, a brand new visual essay exploring body horror and transcendence in the work of Clive Barker by genre author Guy Adams (The World House)

The Pursuit of Possibilities - discussion between acclaimed horror authors Paula D. Ashe (We Are Here To Hurt Each Other) and Eric LaRocca (Everything the Dark Eats) celebrating the queerness of Hellraiser and the importance of Clive Barker as a queer writer – NEW (41 mins) Power of Imagination, a brand new 60-minute discussion about Hellraiser and the work of Clive Barker by film scholars Sorcha Ní Fhlainn (editor of Clive Barker: Dark Imaginer) and Karmel KniprathBeing Frank: Sean Chapman on Hellbound – archival interview about the actor’s return to the role of Frank Cotton As it stands, Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth is an okay sequel that isn’t really my thing, but has enough for fans of the franchise or Doug Bradley’s Pinhead in particular to enjoy. As long as you don’t go in expecting something on the same level as those first two instalments, you might have a good time with this one.

Anyway, here's the point: Arrow Video has a brand-new Hellraiser collector's set headed our way, one which includes each of the franchise's first four films in a 4K UHD set. Included amongst that lineup is Hellraiser: Bloodline ... and the never-before-seen "Workprint Version" of Yagher's film, which we assume will restore some of the footage Dimension unceremoniously removed from it. If you're the same kinda Hellraiser fan I am, this is very exciting news, indeed. Books of Blood and Beyond: The Literary Works of Clive Barker - archival appreciation by horror author David Gatwalk of Barker's written work, from The Books of Blood to The Scarlet Gospels Archival audio commentary with writer/director Clive Barker and actor Ashley Laurence, moderated by Peter AtkinsHellraiser: Quartet of Torment is on 4K Ultra HD™ blu-ray from Arrow Video in both 'Limited Edition' (pictured above) and 'Arrow Exclusive Limited Edition' and will be available from the 23 rd October, and will also be available in 4K on ARROW-Player.com.

That’s the general gist, but there’s a lot more going on in the film than gnarly, disturbing gore and one of my favourite elements of the feature is actually how Barker gives the majority of the screen to a well-written and established female antagonist, which felt refreshing at the time the film released. Larry’s daughter Kirsty is the heart of the film and its sequel, and helped Ashley Laurence become a mainstay in the cult horror scene. And so the sequel, Hellbound: Hellraiser II, was rushed into production during the finalisation of the first film and released barely twelve months after. Problems plagued the hastily assembled production, from actors refusing to return forcing script rewrites, to financial problems with production company New World Pictures, the final film is a scruffy, messy expansion of the first that still manages to offer up some stunning designs and scenes and a delicious peak into the mythos of the Cenobites and of Hell itself. Newly uncovered extended Epk interviews with Clive Barker and stars Andrew Robinson, Clare Higgins, Ashley Laurence, and effects artist Bob Keen, shot during the making of Hellraiser, with a new introduction by Stephen Jones and Kim Newman Being Frank: Sean Chapman on Hellbound - archival interview about the actor’s return to the role of Frank Cotton That Rat-Slice Sound - brand new appreciation of composer Christopher Young's scores for Hellraiser and Hellbound: Hellraiser Ii by Guy AdamsThere’s no doubt that the Hellraiser franchise has been diluted somewhat by a sea of inferior sequels and the loss of just about everyone associated with its beginnings in the intervening years. However, there is something that can’t help but resonate with the public’s consciousness about the film’s antagonists and what they stand for – at once terrifyingly evil and wholly unknowable, yet rooted in what it means to be human, their being angels to some and devils to others is a notion we seem unable to shake. And certainly the best of the films are gathered here in this collection, now including one of the most interesting if not quite best of the sequels. Brand new audio commentary featuring genre historian (and unit publicist of Hellraiser) Stephen Jones with author and film critic Kim Newman Hell Was What They Wanted! – brand new 80-minute appreciation of Hellbound, the Hellraiser mythos and the work of Clive Barker by horror authors George Daniel Lea (Born in Blood) and Kit Power (The Finite)
