About this deal

The premiere of the musical was planned at the Tyne Theatre in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, but this was abandoned due to financial problems of the Tyne Theatre's operator, and the production's growing budget. [3] Billy Elliot: The Musical is a coming-of-age stage musical based on the 2000 film of the same name. The music is by Elton John, and the book and lyrics are by Lee Hall, who wrote the film's screenplay. The plot revolves around Billy, a motherless British boy who begins taking ballet lessons. The story of his personal struggle and fulfilment are balanced against a counter-story of family and community strife caused by the 1984–85 UK miners' strike in County Durham, in North East England. Hall's screenplay was inspired in part by A. J. Cronin's 1935 novel about a miners' strike, The Stars Look Down, to which the musical's opening song pays homage. [1]

Nearly a decade on after Billy Elliot the Musical opened in the West End, the piece is looking as healthy as ever, not least because of the way librettist and lyricist Lee Hall, composer Elton John, director Stephen Daldry and choreographer Peter Darling have managed to combine the raw reality of struggling through the 1984-85 miners’ strike with the dreams of a boy who lives to dance. I had forgotten how brilliantly the ‘Solidarity’ sequence brought together the hopes and aspirations of Billy, the miners and the police. The producers of Billy Elliot the Musical sincerely regret to advise that as a result of the Government's announcement..." In County Durham, the 1984–85 coal miners' strike is just beginning ("The Stars Look Down"). Motherless eleven-year-old Billy stays behind after his boxing class to give keys to Mrs. Wilkinson, who runs a ballet class. The class is all girls, but Billy is attracted to the grace of the dance ("Shine"). At first, Billy's interest in dance is easily concealed from his family, as the only person home at the time is his grandmother. She reveals to Billy the abuse she suffered at the hands of her late husband, but that she found great joy in dance ("Grandma's Song").

Daldry fills in some of those gaps with over 30 minutes of deleted footage for which he also provides commentary. "The biggest sacrifice we made to time and length was the character of Tony [Jamie Draven]," says the director. "In these deleted scenes he has much more depth and sympathy." Of course Tony is Billy's macho older brother who is indeed more likeable as he's seen hauling Billy in tow on a night-time coal raid and to spy on a girl he fancies. In a section of extended scenes, you'll also find a subplot involving Billy's grandmother (Jean Heywood) who causes all sorts of strife when she goes walkabout. The whole film is one big stereotype really, but a very real and truthful stereotype. Billy's tough working father is a typical northern bloke who likes beer boxing and a good plate of drippin' sandwiches. The area they live in is of course very working class with small terrace housing along steep hills and flatcaps everywhere and the general attitude of all the men is somewhat old fashioned. Boys partake in football rugby and boxing, girls do ballet and sewing, there is no middle ground...dare I say homophobia is lightly touched upon too. The Real Billy Elliot Diaries traces the story of three boys and how they came to be cast in the stage show. Meanwhile From Screen To Stage focuses on the process of adaptation that began when Elton John first saw the film in Cannes and pitched the idea to Daldry. He compares the dynamic between Billy and his dad with the relationship he had with his own father, admitting that, "I had to be helped sobbing from my seat when it ended!" Daldry is also on hand to explain why the stage version is in many ways more complete than the movie. Karasz, Palko (22 June 2018).
