Product Information

The medicinal product is a combination of two antacids (calcium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate) and an alginate. This medicinal product contains aspartame (E951), a source of phenylalanine. May be harmful for people with phenylketonuria. If you usually take Gaviscon regularly but forget to take a dose, do not double your dose the next time. Just leave out the missed dose and take your next dose as normal. You'll usually take Gaviscon tablets and liquid up to 4 times a day. It's best to take it after meals and at bedtime. This is usually when the pain and discomfort is at its worst. But if your doctor has prescribed Gaviscon, take it when they tell you to. Each 4 tablet dose contains 300 mg (7.5 mmol) of calcium. Care needs to be taken in treating patients with hypercalcaemia, nephrocalcinosis and recurrent calcium containing renal calculi.

The maximum daily dose of this product is equivalent to 44.71% of the WHO recommended maximum daily intake for sodium.If you forget doses often, it may help to set an alarm to remind you. You could also ask your pharmacist for advice on other ways to help you remember to take your medicine. What if I take too much? If you've been taking Gaviscon for more than 7 days and you're still feeling uncomfortable or in pain, talk to your doctor. What if I forget to take it? This product is considered high in sodium. This should be particularly taken into account for those on a low salt diet (e.g. in some cases of congestive heart failure and renal impairment). Treatment of children younger than 12 years of age is not generally recommended, except on medical advice. As with other antacid products, taking this product can mask the symptoms of other more serious, underlying medical conditions.

If symptoms persist, or treatment is required for more than 7 days continuously, medical advice should be sought. But do not take other painkillers, like ibuprofen or aspirin, with Gaviscon without talking to your doctor or pharmacist first. These can make your symptoms worse.
