While Bloodsport may or may not highlight Dux’s supposed possibly probably not accurate exploits of an underground fighting ring, it does have a fun legacy. One of his wackier moments, when he squats in the moonlit snow drawing an open razor repeatedly across his own bald scalp, is also the movie’s eeriest, its effect weakened only by the antiseptic studio environment.

Hertzog's era-specific original score enjoys a much more substantial presence in the rear while not sounding overcooked. I would have loved to see what JCVD has to say about this movie today but apparently, an interview just wasn’t in the cards for this release. But it is just about enough, endearingly unravelled and frequently quite spirited in its depiction of Van Damme's young, heroic actions (the 'chase' across HK streets where CID agents are trying to arrest him is absolutely farcical - clearly intentionally so - with Van Damme literally dancing his way out of trouble), whilst the tournament is built up to biblical proportions - brick smashing, death-punch-throwing fantasy, and strained, sinew-popping, full-face screams that are now the subject of countless internet memes and gifs.They play ride-or-dies who work together for the Godmother (a vampy, underused Isabelle Adjani), who gives them high-risk missions around Europe. Lance Henriksen is great in everything he does and his Fouchon is next-level diabolical - and hilarious.

To be frank, Margo Harkin’s documentary reviewing the horrors of Ireland’s mother-and-baby institutions – essentially state- and church-run factories churning out children for adoption, shame and misery – doesn’t swerve far from the template outlined above.For the few quiet conversational segments, the mix is mostly front/center channel focused but when we get into Hong Kong streets or the Kumite arena, the mix opens up nicely for a rich surround presence. It can vary from shot to shot - Donald Gibb's rough, hairy look at times impressively rendered, at other times looking a smidge hazy but it's clear that several shots were incapable of being better resolved due primarily to the source - patent zooms being the biggest culprits to outright softer focus. And true to form as a film fan, he even repays Tarantino’s use of his signature standoff in Reservoir Dogs by cutting off the ear of one of Fouchon’s lackeys.
