Sorry I'm coming late to the party. I did love my Vaude poncho. It kept me dry in many a storm! I have two as they first one was so long I looked like half a pantomime horse in it. For the VdlP I bought a smaller size and it was much better. Nylon is very similar to polyester in its properties in that thin strands are woven together to create a durable and lightweight fabric ideal for outdoor clothing. While the strands of nylon are waterproof (they don’t hold moisture) a fabric made from woven fibers will need some kind of treatment to make it fully waterproof. PU stands for polyurethane which is a type of plastic that will bond with synthetic fibers to create a waterproof layer. Ripstop Nylon is basically a special type of weave which makes the fabric extra resistant to tears and if there is a puncture it won’t easily turn into a gaping hole. PVC When not needed, gather up the dangly cord into a bundle (do this for each side) like an extension cord. You will not notice it as you walk, but it is easily released if needed. I use a twist tie that is kept attached to each cord. If you’re looking for a poncho that’ll go the distance, the Sea To Summit Nylon Tarp-Poncho is as tough as it comes.VERDICT: The Lightweight Ripstop Nylon Rain Poncho from Arcturus is super lightweight and secure. Cheap ponchos are a dime a dozen, and it can be tough to sort the good from the bad in that regard. Anyoo’s latest update to their Lightweight Poncho is very good indeed, and makes it a more attractive option than ever if you’re working on a tight budget. You can apply as little or as much tension as you wish, but do not over-tighten, as this will stress the poncho fabric unnecessarily. Now you can button up as much or as little of the sides of the poncho as you wish, adjusting for desired airflow. Made famous by GORE-TEX in the 1970s, breathable laminates are still the best waterproof fabrics for waterproof clothing. This is because if they don’t breathe, the condensation build-up will soak you from the inside out. This is not so important for ponchos as they tend to be very well ventilated but if you see a laminated breathable poncho it will no doubt be ideal for hiking. Nowadays there are many different laminates out there but all of them have similar compositions and the intention of being as waterproof and breathable as possible. Sil-Nylon and Sil-PolyIt's very sturdy and definitely waterproof. Not cheap, sadly, and not ultralight (500g) but good quality. If the weather is really bad I use it combined with rain trousers or gaiters and a hat. That is of course not necessary for a light summer rain, but really nice on days when it's constantly cold and wet. VERDICT: The Swagman Roll Military Poncho from Helikon-Tex is not your average lightweight plastic poncho, this is heavy-duty and can be used in many ways other than as a poncho. It is strong and reliable and appeals to hunters and forestry workers who brush through overgrown areas. This is one poncho you don’t really have to worry about, which makes it great to sit on too.
