About this deal

In 1969, he joined the Islamic University of Madinah to teach Arabic Philology. Here, he was also associated with the Programme of teaching Arabic as a foreign language. The author presents Arabic as a living and vibrant language and takes examples from Arabic in everyday use, as also from the Qur'an and Sunnah, so that as the student learns the languages, he also acquires an understanding of hundreds of Qur'anic verses, ahadith, Arabic parables and poetry. This allows the student to become directly involved in the study of the Qu'ran and Sunnah while also acquiring a sound understanding of the Arabic language. Formerly the Director of the ‘Institute of Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language’, Islamic University, Madinah; Use the below resources for studying and mastering the Books 1,2 and 3 of “Lessons in Arabic language” [as taught at the Islaamic University of Madeenah] written by Shaykh Dr. V. ‘Abdur-Raheem There is no index of grammatical terms. Some terms are introduced once, disappear for a few lessons, & then reappear again. This can get confusing. My recommendation for other students of these textbooks is to make a list—either in a notebook, on a sheet of paper near where you study, or perhaps ideally digitally, so that it can be alphabetised—of all new grammatical terms as they are first introduced.

Arabic Course for English Speaking Students 1 - Darussalam

It allows the student to become directly involved in the study of the Qu'ran and Sunnah while also acquiring a sound understanding of the Arabic language. A large chunk of the vocabulary used in the dialogues & exercises does not appear in the vocabulary lists in the English text. This necessitates the use of a dictionary. The third volume of this series recommends Hans Wehr's Arabic dictionary, but no instruction is given in volumes one or two for how to look terms up in Wehr. Like most good Arabic dictionaries, Wehr's functions quite differently from European language dictionaries, & students need to know how to identify words' roots. Here's what you should know in advance: The course is geared toward practicing Muslim students. This manifests itself in three ways that might be of importance to non-Muslim students: 1) The book assumes that the reader can already read Arabic for pronunciation, but not meaning. If you don't know the Arabic writing system & the pronunciation of the letters, you'll need to start somewhere else first. 2) The book assumes some knowledge of particular Islamic vocabulary. For example, one of the grammatical explanations uses the phrase صلى الله عليه وسلام after the name of the Prophet Muhammad, but does not give the meaning of the word صلى. Most Muslim students will know this, already, as the benediction is a common utterance after Muhammad's name. It might be unfamiliar to non-Muslim English-speakers. 3) With the introduction of two non-Muslim characters in one dialogue, a footnote is added praying for their eventual conversion/reversion to Islam. I appreciate the sentiment, but I can imagine some learners for whom this would be offensive. They should probably find a different textbook. These books are not the three medina books that everyone knows about; rather they are the books that are used alongside the medina books that are used in the Medina University, these books a wide variety of topics like phrase usage of verbs and terms, Fiqh, Dictation, Hadith, Reading in which the 3 Medina Books by themselves do not cover. Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) is the recognised means of formal spoken and written communication. It is used throughout the Arabic-speaking world on official occasions, in education and the media.A Glossary of words used in Durus al-Lughah al-Arabiyyah li ghair al-natiqina biha – by Dr. V.Abdur Rahim
