An exciting new eatery is set to move into the former Thorntons chocolate shop on Whitefriargate this Spring. Details on the new eatery have so far been kept under wraps, with more information set to emerge soon. There are already a couple of other bubble tea places in the city, which have proven to be a big hit with customers who enjoy the signature tea with tapioca pearls. This place needs a new buzz, restaurants, café bars, chairs and tables outside with a good feel to the now dead place." The café will breathe new life into Whitefriargate, after store units along the once-buzzing shopping street began to gradually empty over the last few years. Many were disappointed when Thorntons departed the corner unit near Pandora, and have waited a long time for the space to be taken over, while hoping to see the area revitalised once again in the future.

The café will sell bubble tea - an East Asian drink that has grown in popularity over recent years. Its menu is scheduled to launch online on May 1. The announcement came as Ogino - a Japanese restaurant in Beverley - announced its closure, but advised guests that any gift vouchers could be redeemed at the new city centre café. A statement from Ogino reads: "(You can use gift vouchers) at 'Crepes and Bubbles', a fantastic crepes & bubble tea shop, opening its door at the old Thorntons shop on Whitefriargate near Princes Quay this May (menus will be online on 1st May)."Another reader, Gill, said: "Really sad, gonna miss this shop, been going in Thorntons for years. A shame for the city centre - another shop down." The Hull city centre unit has been empty for almost two years, following the departure of Thorntons in 2021. From May, a new eatery called Crepes And Bubbles will be open for business.
