About this deal

Having recently created the hole in my kitchen myself, here is how it was done. Unless you have the tools and knowhow, it might pay to get a professional to do this for you.

Rectangular ducting is ideal for fitting in kitchens concealed above wall units, in wall or ceiling voids due to its low profile. Each length of pipe or number of bends on the system will result put resistance on the fan / cooker hood and therefor reducing its performance. These should be kept to a minimum.Properties: Class A1 fire-rated 0.9mm/0.5mm galvanised steel. Class A2-s1, d0 fire-rated RAL colour powder coating. Spot welded. Everbuild Fire Mate intumescent and acoustic sealant used on all gaps. The 127mm diamond core bit was then used on the outside, with the drill guide in the centre of it, to ensure that the drill bit maintained its positioned and the 2 half holes met in the middle. Can you have half a hole?? hum… A pilot hole was created from inside the house to outside, with a 13mm masonry bit and a powerful drill. Those battery powered drills don’t really cut the mustard here so a mains powered one is best. The recommendations were that a rotary drill with a minimum power drive of 850 watts should be used and capable of speeds up to 3000rpm.

As you can see, the hole on the inside is pretty neat but there are bits of chipped plaster on the edge of the whole. You could use some Polyfilla One Fill to tidy things up but with the 17cm plastic covering that attaches to the wall and the 20cm wide chimney that covers the hole, nobody is ever going to see the imperfections behind the extractor. Just to confuse things rectangular ducting works the other way, so straight lengths are small end ‘male’ and duct fitting such as bends and reducers are large end ‘female’. Slotting together easily. Our straight lengths of plastic duct are large end ‘female’ and fittings such as bend and reducers are small end ‘male’. This means they simply slot together. You should insulate ductwork or buy pre-insulated ductwork if the duct passes through un-heated spaces such as a loft. This will minimise condensation inside the duct. As you can see from the image above, the square section of the ducting kit with the vents will go on the outside of your home. The piece of conduit then attaches to that the goes through the wall to the inside of the house. The square section that you can see in the middle attaches to the wall inside your home to cover up any unsightly mess that was created whilst creating the hole. The rest of the conduit attaches to the top of the extractor hood with the supplied 125mm circular connector in the ducting kit, that fits onto the end of the conduit.

How do I get the hole in my wall?

dia. – custom overall length (including plastic duct connector RD4CONN – refer to drawing). Note: Rytons recommend adding 100mm to the external wall measurement to ensure the duct and connector finish within the inner leaf. Made from Class A1 fire-rated galvanised steel and compliant with regulations for the requirement of non-combustible ducting in the external walls of high-rise buildings over 18m (11m in Scotland) and those 11m and above undergoing unsafe cladding remediation work. Other sizes and finishes are available upon request, along with a full range of fittings and ancillary components.

A common question people ask is “I’m having a new cooker hood andI’vebeen told I need a ducting kit to get the air outside. What is a ducting kit and how do I fit one?” The ducting kit system is ideal for extractor fans or low power cooker hoods, whereas the 150mm is the most efficient ducting system for high power cooker hoods. So, this is what the hole looks like at the moment. I would not recommend performing this exercise in Winter! Well a ducting/venting kit comprises of a few components, as shown below, and allows you to direct warm air and cooking odours out of your kitchen and send them outside through an external wall.Flexible hoses should be as short as possible as these put high resistance on fans & cooker hoods etc. x 54mm – custom overall length (including plastic duct connector RD4FR+RD4CONN – refer to drawing). Note: Rytons recommend adding 200mm to the external wall measurement to ensure the duct and connector finish within the inner leaf. This is what the top of the average cooker hood looks like where you attach the conduit and connector to. Although not essential in all cases, plastic ductwork can be welded (glued) or taped to seal the duct .

A range of tailor-made 100mm dia. spiral metal ducting kits with a choice of rectangular or round connector to suit HVAC supply and extract ducting 110x54mm/100mm dia.

We offer three of the most common sizes available. 110x54, 204 x 60 and high performance flat channel duct 220 x 90.
