About this deal

As always, I give you a heads up about strong language or graphics in case you’re sensitive, or if the person you’re recommending the book to is sensitive. This book does have some strong language. CONCLUSION I have to say this is not up there with my favourite Jane Corry books just because it really wasn't a thriller. Combining all the classic ingredients of a rip-roaring psych thriller–a creepy We Need to Talk about Kevin-esque child, an unexplained disappearance, a dysfunctional family– The Lies We Told adds pace and suspense in a way that’s refreshing for even the most jaded of readers….If you want to be kept awake at night then The Lies We Told is your insomnia buddy.”— Stylist

Lies We are Told, the Truth We Must Hold by Sharon James Lies We are Told, the Truth We Must Hold by Sharon James

Cambridge, 1980: Beth and her husband tried for years to have a child until they were finally blessed with a beautiful baby girl named Hannah. But as their little bundle of joy starts to grow up, it appears she might be a little ... disturbed? Maybe I’m losing my touch? No chance – it’s just that good. Very curious to see how well you all do!! When Sarah visits Freddie in prison, she talks about how he sits behind glass, and they both put a hand up to it to "touch". In the next sentence, however, they're hugging. but regardless of murder investigations, i do think the commentary on hate crimes towards asian americans is important and worth reading, which is why im rounding up! However, there is also a lot of unnecessary information that impacts the pace. Excessive detail and repetitive descriptions of places and feelings start to get a bit old toward the second half of the narrative’s third act. It’s not bad enough to detract from the overall quality of the novel, but it’s present enough to be a bit of a nuisance at times.

While the author’s controlling rein on the narrative keeps attention focused on questions about Luke’s disappearance, her characterization of the important players in the story is less sharp. We have to take Luke’s charm and popularity on trust. Clara is nice and well-liked but is always a rather blurry presence. The eventual revelations about Rose and Oliver are unsuspected because their early characterization sets them up as the archetypal “wonderful couple.” She handles her dual narrative deftly, meting out well-paced details that create and develop tension as readers puzzle out the ties between Beth’s story about Hannah and Clara’s investigation of Luke’s disappearance.

BOOK REVIEW: ‘The Lies We Told’ By Camilla Way BOOK REVIEW: ‘The Lies We Told’ By Camilla Way

thank you to Netgalley, Penguin UK and Jane Corry for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review* I really enjoyed this author’s previous novel " Watching Edie” so I had high hopes for this novel. I’m happy to say that I really enjoyed it. More often than not, family stories turn out to be etched in sand rather than granite. Even the parts we think are true-even the parts about ourselves-crumble under scrutiny. These are the lies we tell everyone who knows us. These are the lies we tell ourselves. In “The Lies We Told,” author Camilla Way twines two stories into a double helix, twisting them seamlessly around each other so that we know they really form one tale, but for long enough cannot quite see how they will eventually merge. In the second part she turns to the truth which leads to real liberation and justice. She shows why we don’t need to be ashamed of Christ, or intimidated by the claims of those who are militantly opposed to the Bible.
