Lighting has become an expected feature for today’s gaming mice. The SteelSeries Rival 100 comes with customizable lighting under its scroll wheel and rear logo.The SteelSeries Engine software lets you choose from a theoretical 16.8 million colors, though admittedly the granularity is hard to see. While they do nothing to help your game, they do add some style points to your desktop. If you’re looking for a simple gaming mouse with a decent sensor that’s not going to break the bank, the SteelSeries Rival 100 definitely fits the category. *We were sent a sample of the SteelSeries Rival 100 for the purposes of this review.Bought the mouse at 1500 and it feels great to hold. Since I have a palm grip, this mouse completely suits me. Also recommended for those having a claw grip. This mouse is plug and play for both Windows and Mac and uses the Steelseries Engine 3 software which we’ll get into later in the review. For the review of the Steelseries Rival 100 & Rival 300, I thought I’d do something a little different, a side-by-side to see how these two tiers of gaming mice compare. I have the Steelseries Rival 300 in white on the left, and a red Steelseries Rival 100 on the right. Steelseries is considered to be one of the best gaming mouse manufacturers on the market due to their reputation for quality and the longevity of their products. So let’s see what they got.
Ease of Use
In addition to turning off the lights entirely, the Rival 100 offers three lighting settings to choose from: A few customization options are available for the Rival 100 through SteelSeries Engine. For starters, all the buttons are programmable. Another neat feature is the option to set customized macros. And finally, there are the options to adjust CPI settings, lighting, angle snapping, and acceleration settings. Anyway, 4,000 DPI might not seem like a lot compared to Razer's 16,000 DPI mice. But most users will never want their mice to move any faster than the Rival 100's max setting. 4K is way too fast for me. At the top evidently my mouse settings were being affected by Windows Pointer options, so I let Engine 3 fix them for me. In the mouse button settings you can change all 6 buttons to whatever you like, including keyboard buttons, macros, media buttons, normal mouse buttons, and shortcuts and launchers, too. You can also set the action to happen on press or release.
