About this deal

Prior to working for PCMag, I was the managing editor of Game Developer magazine. I've also worked at the Association for Computing Machinery, The Examiner newspaper in San Francisco, and The American Institute of Physics. I was once profiled in an article in Vogue India alongside Marie Kondo. Designed primarily to work on your wrist, accessories also allow it to work on your forearm, bicep, or with Whoop's line of clothing. Most of the chest strap heart rate monitors we tested were designed to be one-size-fits-all and can be adjusted to fit a wide range of sizes. The exception was the Polar H10, which comes in two sizes. Is A Chest Strap Heart Rate Monitor Better Than a Wrist Monitor? The Verity Sense is a distillation of the OH1 and OH1+ Polar armbands that came before it and is comfortably the top choice for those who don't want a wrist- or chest-based monitor.

The triathlete-focused watch harnesses Garmin’s Elevate algorithm, finishing as the most accurate wrist-based heart rate monitor in our test. It didn’t quite manage to report large heart rate fluctuations in the same speedy manner as the straps, but, generally, the data matched up very favourably.Pros: Great accuracy for an optical sensor; feature-rich; strong battery life Cons: Design not for everyone

You’ll need to decide if you’d prefer a watch display or a smartphone display. Many heart rate chest straps connect to a wristwatch receiver that captures and continuously displays data. Conveniently, you don’t have to push any buttons to see your heart rate; it’s there whenever you want to see it. However, in some cases, the wrist receiver for a heart rate chest strap is sold separately. This adds to the overall price. The HRM-Pro + is essentially the same as the HRM Pro, but there's one big design difference that makes it the top Garmin chest strap to own right now. Heart rate monitors (HRMs) can be immensely beneficial if you know how to use the information they collect. Exercise has dramatically different effects on the body depending on how high you push your heart rate and for how long. Training intelligently means using heart rate data to guide your workouts. Sometimes you might want to keep your heart rate relatively low to burn fat or pace yourself for a longer workout, but other times you might want to push it higher to build stamina. Another reason to own an HRM is to keep an eye on your resting heart rate with a device that can automatically record it for you.

Once you're in the app, it's easy to go into settings and connect to the heart-rate monitor as long as your phone's Bluetooth is on. In the app you'll see you can select from 19 different activities to measure your heart rate, including some that don't use GPS, like strength training and treadmill running, tennis, badminton, indoor cycling or other indoor activities. This heart-rate monitor can also be used for swimming, as it's waterproof. Before you buy a chest strap heart-rate monitor, you'll want to determine what type of activity you will be doing while wearing it. Most are suitable for a range of cardio activities, from running to cycling, but not all would work for swimming, for example. In terms of body placement, the Whoop Strap 4.0 is by far the most versatile heart rate monitor on the market. The ANT+ and Bluetooth support means the key connectivity bases are covered to work with apps and platforms like Zwift and it’ll play nice with Garmin watches and bike computers. There were no flaky pairing issues using it with the latest Fenix, Forerunner and Vivoactive watches. It’s waterproof up to 50 metres too, which means it can do the job of measuring heart rate in the pool or open water better than a watch will.

ANT Plus vs. Bluetooth:Most wrist-worn heart-rate monitors like the Apple Watch use Bluetooth, which only lets you connect to one device. For example, if you're recording an outdoor run, you can only connect your Apple Watch to your iPhone. It comes in three size options (42mm, 47mm, and 51mm), and, during over 100 tests against other watches and a chest strap, it's the most consistently in line with the latter. Consistency: A good heart rate monitor will consistently capture data without breaks or glitches throughout even the longest, sweatiest workouts. When you put a heart rate chest strap on, make sure the sensor is centered on your chest in the upright position. FAQ I wouldn’t describe any chest strap heart rate monitor as particularly comfortable. But like the others I tried, once I started my workout, I hardly noticed it was there. And although I didn’t have the opportunity to test this product over a long-term period, I’d expect it to perform well over time based on the product specs. According to the manufacturer, the batterylasts up to 3.5 years, assuming you use it for one hour per day. The Verity Sense is an upgrade on Polar’s previous armband, the OH1. It offers a longer battery life at 20 hours (vs 12 on the OH1), and is waterproof to 50m as opposed to 30m. It also has more internal memory for storing workouts, and three modes you can switch between, with LEDs on the device showing which one you’re in. The first mode is for when you want to connect it to a watch or phone, the second is to record a workout on the Verity Sense itself, and the third is a swimming mode, during which you can strap it to your goggles.

My plan was to use each product for at least a week’s worth of workouts, including bike rides, HIIT training, and strength training. The bulk of my testing time was spent using each heart rate monitor with my Wahoo Bolt Element cycling computer. For my indoor cycling workouts, I paired each heart rate monitor with Strava and the Stages indoor bike console while my phone was simultaneously connected to Bluetooth headphones. For the strength and HIIT sessions, I paired each product with the Strava app.

It’s important to consider the material that the band for a heart rate chest strap is made of because you likely won’t be able to swap parts out later. (Most transmitters are only compatible with straps from the same brand.) You may find one material more comfortable than another, which in turn could impact your exercise experience. Working out at higher intensities can also interfere with heart rate monitor accuracy.“ Heart rate measures from the Apple Watch, Fitbit Charge HR 2, and electrocardiogram across different exercise intensities” Physical Activity, Health and Exercise (January 2019) My latest book is The Everything Guide to Remote Work, which goes into great detail about a subject that I've been covering as a writer and participating in personally since well before the COVID-19 pandemic.
