About this deal

In reading the memoir side I did feel a little bad for her older siblings during Kitty's breakdown and the beginning of her bread obsession.

We get a glimpse of the ups and downs of growing a business while trying to still have a life away from work. I deeply appreciated the honesty that Al in particular presents here - that he and his wife did not see what was happening at the start, that they were bewildered by the change in their youngest daughter, and that they struggled to figure out what to do. This book could not have arrived at a better time than in today’s post pandemic society - as we’ve all dragged ourselves through the traumatic, unexpected and frankly hard to fathom period of time that was lockdowns, restrictions and banana bread a plenty, this book feels like a cosy cuddle.

Gorgeously illustrated and a really beautiful testament to a deep passion for bread and baking and eating and everything fun. Tenacity and passion permeate Breadsong, a moving, life-affirming memoir and recipe book by Kitty and Al Tait that celebrates the joys of bread-based baking … The family's amazing story is alchemized with equal amounts of inspiration and deliciousness. In this uplifting work, the British dad-and-daughter duo behind Oxfordshire's Orange Bakery fold innovative recipes into a moving testament to the healing power of baking … Kitty's passionate creativity is as irresistible as her creations. The first half is the most beautiful story about a daughter and her father and how baking bread taught them so much much about life and the second half is like a beautiful artisan scrapbook of recipes. Kitty, at 14 quickly spiralled from bubbly teen into a dark depression and her family gave their all to help her.

In 2018, Kitty was at school and Al worked at Oxford University, but when Kitty became so ill she couldn't leave the house, the two discovered baking and, in particular, sourdough. On my first read, I decided I’d note down the recipes I wanted to try, but I soon gave up when I realised I was just copying out the whole book. It was a brave move for her father to give up the job of teaching to become a baker in partnership with his daughter. This book is an inspirational true story of a teenagers battle with extreme depression, breadmaking saved her. Breadsong is also a cookbook full of Kitty's favourite recipes, including: - the Comfort loaf made with Marmite, and with a crust that tastes like Twiglets - bitesize queue nibbles, doughnuts with an ever-changing filling to keep the bakery queue happy - sticky fika buns with mix-and-match fillings such as cardamom and orange - Happy Bread covered with salted caramel - cheese straws made with easy homemade ruff puff pastry - the ultimate brown butter and choc chip cookies with the perfect combination of gooey centre and crispy edges.

I feel like saying anything negative about this book would make me a jerk, so if you're looking for a book with a positive message that has some decent baking recipes, you may enjoy this one. I started off feeling a bit concerned as although the book sounded interesting and relevant to me, I really wasn't in the mood for reading a non fiction book. The memoir element is a beautiful insight into a sadly very relatable theme - tackling mental health issues as a family while finding creative outlets for tension is one that I feel will strike a chord with a lot of us. I chose this book because on the surface, it is about anxiety and depression, something I suffered from at a similar age to Kitty. I bake (unprofessionally), although not as much as I used to thanks to a Neurological condition I have developed, but I still try to when I can. You reading it means everything to me' Kitty Tait Breadsong tells the story of Kitty Tait who was a chatty, bouncy and full-of-life 14 year old until she was overwhelmed by an ever-thickening cloud of depression and anxiety and she withdrew from the world. I'll admit I sometimes skim or even skip over the background section in cookbooks, but trust me, don't skip this!

As someone who was really poorly as a teenager with mental illness, I deeply relate to the story and found it really uplifting and joyful to read about someone who found something worth living for. It's the story of how they ended up running a bakery together, and while that sounds all heartwarming - and it is, absolutely - but it starts because baking a loaf of bread is one thing that Al tries to help Kitty with her crippling anxiety.
