The Alpha 9 Gen 4 does a decent job of upscaling a film that can come across as quite noisy. The filters take care of the worst of that while leaving some impressive skin details in the close-ups. Tom Cruise’s battle-hardened Reacher is complete with pits and scars and everything you’d expect. Speaking of which, the response times in the dedicated Game Optimiser mode are exceptional. I measured an input lag of 12ms on a 60Hz signal (both 1080p and 4K HDR), and this halved to an insanely fast 6ms on a 120Hz signal. This year LG has added a Prevent Input Delay (Input Lag) setting that can boost the response for 60Hz content, reducing the delay to below 10ms. Cinema Home is the one to go for, though, for the very best that this TV can offer. Fine tune with the sharpness slider and adjust the colour temp to the look you like and you’ve got it all within a matter of minutes. That model is the OLED48CX, a 48in OLED from LG. The Korean company was an early investor in OLED tech and is now reaping the rewards: to the best of our knowledge, every OLED TV you can currently buy – whether it’s branded Sony, Panasonic, Philips, Hisense or anything else – features an LG panel. Predictably, more 48in OLEDs are now on the way, but the 48CX is blazing the trail. And it’s doing so in some style. PricingThe LG OLED48C1 is a terrific all-round TV and one that’s easy to recommend to anybody. The Philips 48OLED806 might be better for pure cinematic performance but this LG is more usable and significantly easier to get the best out of. This is physical damage to the surface of the screen and does not affect the pixels behind. It is most visible when the screen is switched off when the light reflects against it from certain angles, and is not always visible when watching a moving picture from a normal viewing distance of around 2 metres. It will not worsen over time. That’s far from a disaster, though. The C9 was a smart-looking TV and the CX is equally so. There are few ways a manufacturer can differentiate its TVs’ designs these days, but the smooth, sculpted pedestal is more elegant than the simple feet of most rivals and gives the set a marginally narrower footprint than some.
