I love every book McCann has ever written, but this one is my favorite. It’s the fictional account of the lifeRudolf Nureyev, the great Russian ballet dancer. The book spans the breadth of Nureyev’s life, from his childhood in the Soviet Union to his continent-hoping fame and the decadence and tragedy of New York in the eighties. Nureyev’s story is told here by a wide-ranging cast of characters, from his first dance teacher to the man who makes his ballet shoes. It’s a gorgeous, moving, kaleidoscope of novel. Ruby by Cynthia Bond Set in Victorian England, this book is the story of a seventeen year old girl who dreams of a life beyond the confines of her role as a respected doctor’s daughter. Instead, she is declared a lunatic and put in an asylum. While there, she slowly puzzles together the events that led to her imprisonment. Patience and Sarah by Isabel Miller Completed in 1914, but not published until after Forster’s death in 1971, this quiet but beautiful novel did what queer books in 1914 were not generally allowed to do: provided a happy ending for its characters. Maurice is a coming-of-age story and a love story, and above all, it’s a story about shedding societal notions about a what makes a proper life and being true to your own self. Giovanni’s Room by James Baldwin Porn has long been blamed for fuelling sexist attitudes and setting unrealistic sexual expectations. Research has provided contradictory results, but one study delved deeper. Researchers from the University of Copenhagen and University of California in Los Angeles asked 200 adults about their porn consumption and assessed their personality in terms of agreeableness, which is one of the “big five” personality traits that indicates how altruistic, helpful, trusting and sociable a person is.

There’s romance and friendship and heartbreak, but mostly, it’s a book about queer family and the unexpected ways that love (in its many forms) alters our lives. An Unseen Attraction by K.J. Charles Straight, male participants – half with compulsive sexual behaviour (CSB) and half without – were asked to rate sexual and non-sexual video clips while they underwent fMRIs. CSB, often referred to as sexual addiction, involves an obsession with sexual thoughts, urges or behaviours that can cause a person distress, and negatively affect their job, relationships and other areas of their life. Alan Hollinghurst famously questioned the future of the gay novel this year, which is striking since he's often viewed as helping make queer books accessible to a mainstream audience. His 2004 novel broke through in a major way -- The Line of Beauty won that year's prestigious Man Booker Prize for fiction.

I don’t actually remember how old I was but, based on where I was living at the time, I know I was younger than ten years old when this incident happened.
