About this deal

This in part because legally, not every country shares the same definition, classification and data collection of femicides, resulting in cases of violence against women being wrongly categorized as regular homicides. The report issued by ECLAC notes how in many cases, killings of women by their current or former partners are not considered femicides, even when there have been previous reports of domestic violence, as in the case of Abril. Furthermore, only a minority of countries in the region record gender-based killings of transsexual women and/or female sex workers as femicides, further skewing the numbers. When a boat explodes in the harbour, Richard and his team soon realise there’s a new murderer on the loose. But who is it? And why did the killer leave behind a ruby at the scene of the crime? Series eleven will see even more mysterious murders, guest stars galore, huge surprises and plenty of twists. How will Marlon cope without JP? Will Neville disclose how he really feels about Florence and how will she respond to this bombshell? If that’s not enough, could the return of familiar faces to the island cause trouble in paradise?

Worse still, they soon realise this is only the beginning. They’ve got to catch the killer before there's another death in paradise… I live in a villa on a cliff overlooking the sea, with an amazing view to Antigua on one side and Montserrat on the other,” said Kris Marshall. “On a really clear day – which is rare, because the volcano usually has a pall of cloud around it – you can see pyroclastic flows running all the way down to the sea.” Jason Rafiel: It wasn't my idea, and the person who had it - the idea, I mean - is a little old lady who knits and wears lace. She also has a mind like a bacon slicer. It found that even though the total number of murders in Jamaica dropped after the report’s completion to 1,124 in 2011 – a seven-year low – the country has the highest homicide rate in the Caribbean and the third-highest murder rate worldwide in recent years, with about 60 murders per 100,000 inhabitants. An exotic holiday for Miss Marple is ruined when a retired major is killed… As Miss Marple sat basking in the Caribbean sunshine she felt mildly discontented with life. True, the warmth eased her rheumatism, but here in paradise nothing ever happened. Eventually, her interest was aroused by an old soldier’s yarn about a strange coincidence. Infuriatingly, just as he was about to show her an astonishing photograph, the Major’s attention wandered. He never did finish the story. A decade ago, as the comedy-drama Death in Paradise was becoming a television hit, Detective Chief Superintendent Hamish Campbell retired from Scotland Yard and set off for the Caribbean. Thorogood sets the stage well, with a great sub-plot involving Poole and his compulsive need to micro-manage his officers, trying the patience of everyone around him, even as they appreciate his gift for detective work. He has breathed new life into the distinctive characters I first saw on television and provides a great mystery for them to solve. I am proud to report that I was able to actually solve the mystery, but it was NOT EASY! (I stopped before the big reveal to reread key passages in the novel and work it out.) Thorogood is very skilled in misdirection and kept me on the edge of my seat. I enjoyed the book immensely. Really a great read, I wish the other books in the series would be available one kindle as the are really enjoyable and that is mostly how I do my reading these days. Murder In The Caribbean by Robert Thorogood is a marvellous, light hearted, gripping, contemporary murder mystery. It is the fourth book in the Death In Paradise series but can be read as a stand-alone.

As for the impact on the region’s economies, estimates by the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) show that the cost of gang-related crime is between 2.8 per cent and 4 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP) in the region through both the cost of policing and as a result of lost income from youth incarceration and reduced tourism. This corner of Basse-Terre does indeed have a lot to recommend it. It’s an oddity in the Caribbean because it has good infrastructure (technically part of France and the European Community, it is much more prosperous than other islands nearby), and yet its beaches remain relatively undeveloped. The Fort Royal Hotel, where I and many of the film crew stayed, is the only hotel of any size in the area. Most of the island’s tourist hotels can be found near the white sand and turquoise sea of Grande-Terre – the island’s flatter, coral-based eastern half. Reprising their roles are series regulars Ralf Little as D.I. Neville Parker, Josephine Jobert as D.S Florence Cassell, Don Warrington as Commissioner Selwyn Patterson, Tahj Miles as Officer Marlon Pryce and Elizabeth Bourgine as Mayor Catherine Bordey. At the end of the tenth anniversary series, which averaged nearly nine million viewers, fans saw JP leave Saint Marie, trainee officer Marlon Pryce become a permanent member of the team, and Neville on the cusp of revealing his true feelings for Florence, leaving audiences on the edge of their seats. I find that every island I go to is very different to the previous one,” he told me. “St Maarten is like a Caribbean Magaluf, really, and I’m planning to visit Dominica and St Barts.”

Although all countries in Latin American ratified the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, and 14—Mexico included—ratified the convention’s optional protocol that allows a special UN committee to monitor states’ compliance, these commitments have not translated to a decrease in femicides. I tried to piece the clues together but failed (as usual) to solve the crime. I loved the way the crime and all the loose ends were wound up at the end. It was very reminiscent of Agatha Christie’s Piorot. Guadeloupe is typically Franco-Caribbean, with delicate coastlines hiding a volcanic, wild interior (PH Giraud/Icon Valley) Photo: PH Giraud/Icon Valley The new series of Death in Paradise will air on BBC One at 9pm on Thursdays, starting on January 7 2016.An original story from the creator and writer of the hit BBC One TV series, Death in Paradise, featuring on-screen favourite detective, DI Richard Poole. Unlike most TV series that are spawned from books this is the other way round! The books are based on the TV series, specifically the first few with Richard Poole, Camille, Fidel and Dwayne and, as in the TV series, set on the island of Saint-Marie. Where the TV series has gone a bit off the boil for me now - too many new characters - this series, now on its fourth outing has continued to be of an equal standard of quality. As with the TV series, sometimes I am ahead of the crime busters and sometimes I remained completely flummoxed until the reveal. In this book, sadly, I was a bit too ahead of the game but that didn't really irk me too much as there was still a lot of banter and humour to be had from the rest of the book.

Well shot and acted, and it transports you to a pleasant hotel in the Caribbean. Is Donald Pleasance making up his own dialogue? I'm sure Christie never called anyone a 'saucy mare'. Liberties are taken with the book, some good (Miss Marple's visit to the chambermaid's aunt) and some pointless (made up superstitions about the dead taking revenge). Directors should trust Christie!

It is always a pleasure to return to this series, although the author made us wait quite a bit for this new instalment! Nevertheless, here we have another compelling murder mystery that seems rather straightforward but of course isn’t :0) According to the UN , “violence against women and girls is one of the most widespread, persistent and devastating human rights violations in our world today [and] remains largely unreported due to impunity, silence, stigma and shame surrounding it.” One in three women and girls experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime, and as in Abril’s case, one in two women killed worldwide were murdered by their partners or family. Violence against women is as serious a cause of death and incapacity among women of reproductive age. The actors and crew relocate to Guadeloupe for five or six months of the year (guest actors for individual episodes visit for two weeks). It’s obviously hard work, requiring the crew to be on set for up to 12 hours a day – but life in a tropical paradise has its compensations. While the measure is well-intentioned, the Abril’s of the region—and the thousands of children and girls whose lives have been interrupted by femicide—cannot wait. Countries will have to step up their own protocols beyond better data collection techniques to adequate judicial procedures to prevent and decrease the horrid and high numbers of women killed by the basis of their gender.
