About this deal

The ability to switch between positions is great, and it doesn't just add more bass response, but the entire soundstage is changed slightly.

The CUSTOM Sound Slider of the CUSTOM Studio is slightly fine-tuned, i.e. the differences between minimum and maximum bass reproduction and their intermediate stages are smaller than in the CUSTOM One Pro Plus. The CUSTOM ONE PRO PLUS is like its successful predecessor, the CUSTOM ONE PRO, a versatile headphones making listening to music interactive with a maximum of flexibility. It combines an extraordinary sound with many individually adjustable parameters and provides an all-in-one solution for almost every purpose in private applications, whether for listening to music when travelling or when using the stereo system at home, or gaming. The PLUS in the name stands for an extensive standard in design and comfort. With the CUSTOM Sound Slider, you can easily adapt the audio profile of the headphones to your personal taste or to the music you are listening to. There are four different profiles to choose from, ranging from "Analytical" to Heavy Bass. CUSTOM ONE PRO PLUS delivers a very clean and rich bass, which you can always regulate in its intensity. The first thing we noticed when unboxing these 'phones were that the cups are extremely large, even for a pair of over-ears. Though the Custom One's aren't overly heavy, they are big and bulky. It's clear that sturdiness and audio quality have been prioritised over portability here. All four positions handle the middle and high ranges rather well…a little better than the DT770’s do, in fact! The mid range is natural, with a bit less of the withdrawn/scooped quality that the 770’s are infamous for.Let's get this out of the way. Design-wise, I think these headphones are pretty ugly. I know this is completely subjective, and there it is. These are great. And again, they can be made to be semi-open or open cans quite easily. I can't speculate on the sound difference other than closed, but when I can I'll update this. Ever wanted to watch someone's mouth moving and not hear a word they're saying while listening to music? I can't even hear myself talking while music is playing at 70%. Can just barely hear a finger snap right outside the earcup at 70% (and I can snap loud). At 18dB of isolation, these cans are top of the line for the pricerange. And the fit is awesome. Regardless of your headsize. I've tested with heads other than mine and everyone says they're snug, and sealed. At first the lower registers were jumping all over the low/mids to the point where male vocalists sounded like they were singing into a garbled microphone through a tube from a different room. That has all changed now that everything has been broken in. Please forgive my n3wbiness here but it sounds as though the burn in period allowed for adequate separation of the bass from the mids. The mids seem to be much more flexible and present as compared to when they came out of the box. At this point, both the male and female vocalists on Above and Beyond's "Satellite/Stealing Time" acoustic mix sounded amazing. At first it sounded as though the male singer was singing at half volume compared to the female.

The mids on the COP's have been the most frustrating part of the sound, and it has take a long time the mids to blossom. When I first started listening to the COP's the mids where terrible and in particular the upper mids. With a lot of listening though (100+ hours) the mids have come out much more and sound a long better, though they are a little recessed. From our testing, the result is absolutely incredible. These headphones sound as good as any we've tested, certainly they are on a par with the Fidelio L1s and Pro Beats, if not surpassing them. The sound has incredible clarity and precision - and you can make out each individual component of the music, rather than a mesh of sound.Position 3 is somewhere in the neighborhood of the original DT770’s. Bass is elevated, velvety, deep, and good. Amplification is not needed, but it does give more body and power to your sound and that is always a pleasure to listen too. I’ve been using the JDSLabs C421 and Fiio E10 + E11 mostly, there is absolutely no use for big desktop amps but I did try it with the 339 and V200 as well, but the difference with the C421 i.e. is minimal for this headphone. These adjustments allow the sound of these headphones to suit a very wide spectrum of tastes. If you’re used to other consumer headphones, like Beats products, then positions 3 and 4 will offer the sort of thump you enjoy but with much more clarity.

Maybe the most interesting area is the bass slider, which has 4 settings in theory though I often use the slider in between settings (I will go into more detail about the bass and the effect the slider has, later in the review). The timbre of bowed string instruments was also delivered with vibrant color. The cello in the Beatles tune “Strawberry Fields” has seldom been delivered with such life, its carving tone reproduced with sawtooth-crunchy goodness. Position 4: Only bassheads need to apply. HEAD SHAKING BASS, but because of the huge bass, it slightly bleeds into the lower mids, making vocals EVEN MORE reccessed then before. DT-880's and M-50's are not designed to go outdoors. The COPs in my mind are aimed very much more to the same kind of market as the V-moda Crossfade LP and LP2 but with a slightly better sound to my mind.In its original state and without any changed-out parts, the Custom One Pro Plus looks and feels extremely robust. Only the exposed cables from the headband to the auricle, which I’m already familiar with from other headphones from this manufacturer, seem a bit fragile. It’s as if it’s just waiting to be damaged during transport, or even when resting them on one of my headphone stands. Customisable for Rich Bass CUSTOM Style allows you to change the look of your headphones at any time. 16 included design covers are only the beginning. Furthermore you can choose from different optional rings, additional design covers, ear- and headband pads available from Beyerdynamic. Příjemná je i účinná pasivní redukce okolního hluku. Ta jednak „ztlumí“ okolí až o 18 dB, v druhém pádě ještě nepropouští ven téměř žádný rušivý zvuk, i když hrajete hodně nahlas. Jde vlastně o promyšlený systém zatlumení mušlí a materiálu vycpávky náušníků.

Sorry for the long “looks” part but as this is one of the selling points of this Custom One Pro I found it important to talk about. Sound & Customisation Total harmonic distortion (THD) at 100 dBA is modest below 100 Hz, but there’s an unusual distortion peak at 70 Hz, which might be audible with certain material. Distortion below 100 Hz is pretty high in open mode, running between 7% and 20%. Isolation is typical for an over-ear design; using the closed mode improves isolation by about -15 dB between 150 and 400 Hz. The Custom One Pro is pretty light on accessories for a headphone pair in this price range, but the cable (which has no remote or mic for mobile phone use) is removable. This increases the overall value of the headphones tremendously, since you don't have to replace the whole system if the cable wears out or malfunctions. Besides the removable cable, you also get a 1/4-inch headphone adapter;there isn't even a cloth carrying pouch. The headband and ear pads are also removable and replaceable, however, which should add to the pair's longevity. Nice design, especially with all the customizable stuff. Has potential to be the most colourful headphones if done right. Then why does it only has 4/5? Because these things are HUGEEEEEE! These are so big that you'll look dumb just wearing them. Combine that with the fact that these doesn't fold flat or inwards makes these cans have 0 portability. Which is weird, considering these are supposed to be portable. The aspect of the Custom One Pro that makes it "custom" is the listener's ability to adjust the bass response. There are sound sliders on each ear—at position one, they offer a "Light Bass" response. At position two, they offer "Linear Bass," position three "Vibrant Bass," and position four "Heavy Bass." I think most listeners will typically prefer positions two or three, but bass lovers can really crank it up if they wish, and studio engineers trying to listen in a more clinical, flat-response manner will find the "Light Bass" setting useful. What is odd is the inclusion of a slider on both ears; you can have the left ear and the right ear at different settings, and I'm not really sure what good this does anyone. It could have some useful studio applications, just as long as you pay attention to these sliders and don't accidentally give yourself a lop-sided mix I haven't had any problems with the highs. To me they sound quite nice and I haven't found them to be too bright, The tonality of the COP is more musical than accurate. The closed cup DT system with a bias to tuning lends itself well to modern pop and dance genres and probably less so with genres requiring delicate articulation and complex layering. This is a fun can, a bass head can but with the port system you can squeeze a little extra juice with some genres that regular fixed cans cannot really conquer or EQ can properly compensate for. DT lovers will certainly find some commonality switching to the COP with slightly thinned out mids great bass and more than adequate top end but don’t expect razor sharp imaging and sound stage. Position 4 pushes these all the way up into basshead territory, but without doing any significant damage to the midrange. This is great! The bass maintains the refined, luxurious, deep character that Beyerdynamic headphones are known for…there’s just more of it. Beyerdynamic also decided to use a detachable cable for their latest release, quite the surprise! It is a 1.5m really flexible tangle free cable finished in a 3.5 mm plug with an adapter. There is no cable noise and I’m guessing the cable is OCC but the only info we got from Beyerdynamic was that it was made from PVC. It’s also mentioned like this on the box and made me smile. Headphone entry is on the left side and they used a standard 3.5 mm plug. I’ve read about an iCable being available as well but we didn’t receive it. The only bad thing about the cable is there is no fix like with the AIAIAI TMA where you have to turn it sideways (not ideal either). I would suggest not to disconnect your cable to often if you want it to stay in tight for a long period.
