About this deal

You may have heard recently that college is overrated. It’s certainly true that educational institutions offer degrees that may not lead to a high-paying career. Not to mention college costs have soared and so has student loan debt. The cost of a college education rose 169 percent from 1980 to 2019 and wages didn’t even come close to keeping pace. But anyway…please, go read this book for yourself. READ THIS BOOK, and encourage others to READ THIS BOOK. But don't do it near an open window, because you might be tempted to jump. Between 1965 - 1975 more than 66% of members in Congress served the country in uniform, today its less than 20%—not a surprise here given how dumb US politicians are. The book is a list of issues, using charts to truthfully and effectively describe the facts, good or bad! During his journey, Callahan experienced a few positive elements aside from suffering, describing the night sky at one point as "A view of heaven from a seat in hell." He still enjoys sailing and the sea, which he calls the world's greatest wilderness. Since his survival drift, he's made dozens of additional offshore passages and ocean crossings, most of them with no more than two other crew.

Howorth, Francis; Howort, Michael, The Sea Survival Manual- Foreword by Steven Callahan, Sheridan House Callahan, Steven. "The Life Raft: Don't Leave Your Ship Without It". Ocean Navigator Magazine . Retrieved 21 July 2012. Despite the tragedy, Tami never stopped sailing and became a 100-ton licensed captain. She is pictured here prior to the Adrift movie's 2018 release. This short read details every aspect of her 41 day journey as she battles testing conditions to reach safety, the fact that her fiance Richard was lost after the yacht hit a hurricane showed Tami's task even more difficult as she tussles with her emotions. Adrift was an incredible tale of survival and resilience under extreme conditions. I love books about extraordinary real-life sagas like this, so I put it on my "to-read" list as soon as I came across it.

charts would be impressive if the data actually showed us anything significant. Call this A Brief History of the United States Since World War II, and it's the same as 100 other books with similar timelines out there. This may be of value to a youngster who needs to understand what happened in economics since 1945 with stops at the 1980 station, and then 2000 on. War > prosperity > prosperity becomes the realm of the 1% > stagnation for the rest of us. The book is very short and can be read in less than a day, which is also unfortunate. Not many people have experienced what the author went through and I believe her ordeal deserved a more detailed description. Perhaps a ghost writer could have helped this author dig deeper into her mind and soul to better describe the loneliness and desparation of the untenable situation. Survival story junkies will revel in all the gory details, from his constant attention to water retrieval to the nuances of spear-fishing to keeping his deteriorating raft afloat for 76 days. Amateur psychologists will enjoy his inner dialogue, the rational consciousness scolding his fearful, despondent self for wanting to panic and give up. Those looking for a story of redemption won't be disappointed either as he notes this experience as making him forever appreciative of the fact that "to be well fed, painless and in the company of friends and loved ones are privileges too few enjoy in this often brutal world". We’re social beings. Our communities give us the daily support we need to survive and thrive. Connection to others and interaction with them is also a key part of building tolerance for those who look or believe differently from us. If we drift apart, society begins to fray. I was annoyed by how many times the author brought up immigration and the benefits immigrants bring to America. His mother immigrated here so of course he's pro-immigration, as am I, but I didn't need to be constantly reminded of it. It started to seem like the whole purpose of the book was to convince Americans that immigration is a good thing (which it is, though obviously not so much for the suffering people who must flee their homes and come to a country where half of us despise them). This isn’t the same as the Adrift trailer. When Ashcraft wakes up in the movie she finds Sharp injured but still alive and in the water. This true adventure/survival story was almost as good as Kon-Tiki, but it still gets 5 stars from me and placed into my favorite book shelf as did Kon-Tiki. After the hurricane hit, after Oldham tries to drag herself from the pit of despair, plagued with thoughts of suicide, there’s a point where she steels herself for what’s to come. I like to read survival stories and there are very good ones out there like Adrift by Steve Callahan and Jungle by Joshi Ginsberg (I hope I wrote the correct names) They are excellent. It is always difficult to decide where a story begins and where it ends. However, some experiences—a romantic evening, a weekend retreat, or a voyage—have fairly distinct dividing lines. They are what I call "whole experiences." To a large degree, the first twenty-nine years of my life represent one whole experience that rests outside the scope of this book. But within those years are the seeds of this story. People often ask me how I got myself into such a fix in the first place. How did I know what to do? Was the boat I lost new or had it been tried before? Why was I sailing offshore in such a small boat? The answers to these questions are an integral part of the story, its foundation. The foundation was laid in 1964, when, at age twelve, I began sailing..."
