It’s easy to see why, isn’t it? Your bad mood didn’t come out of nowhere – you’re stressed, sleep-deprived, and dehydrated!

Smart, insightful, and warm. Dr. Julie is both the expert and wise friend we all need.”— Lori Gottlieb, New York Times bestselling author of Maybe You Should Talk to Someone and co-host of the Dear Therapists podcast Still not convinced? Here are ten reasons why you should listen to the audiobook. 10 Reasons to listen to Why Has Nobody Told Me This Before? the audiobook As a veteran reader of self-help books I look for original content and information that can be actually put to use rather than theoretical prose. This book accomplishes both of these things and there are actual tools and ideas which can be put to use by those who need some help with emotional issues. Dr. Julie has a following on social media and this book is her way of putting together advise on a variety of subjects from self-esteem, to depression to grief. I appreciated the fact that the author did not start the book with chapters of scientific studies on the brain as I have read those many times and that type of information is not useful to someone who is suffering. Each chapter has a theme and she includes ideas which are identified with a light bulb graphic and tools which are identified with a wrench graphic. I would not say any of her tools are new but they are presented in a new way which makes it valuable. When I was offering psychological therapies, I found a lot of people didn’t realise that a part of therapy is educational. You do a lot of talking and working out your problems, but you also learn a little bit about how your mind works, how you can influence your mood and your emotional state and how then you can affect your day-to-day mental health. Dr. Smith's writing style is empathetic and compassionate, creating a safe space for readers to explore their emotions and vulnerabilities. The book not only provides practical tools but also promotes a deeper understanding of how our minds work. This knowledge enables readers to fortify their mental health proactively, making it an essential companion in the journey towards self-care.

Ultimately, wellbeing comes from inward. We have much more power over our own emotions and thoughts than we think, therefore taking responsibility for our own wellbeing allows us to construct new emotional experiences and responses. Full of sound, helpful advice with life skills, from building confidence to managing stress' Sunday Times It's so engaging that it's even led me to switch off my phone for several hours so I can read it, and in this social media-obsessed age, I don't think I can give a bigger recommendation than that.’ – Byrony Gordon, The Telegraph It’s about recognising that you have the power of choice. You have a choice how long you spend online, you have a choice about who you follow and who you don’t and the content you engage in. When you get into mindless scrolling, it can feel like you don’t have a choice.

At the beginning of her book (her first, certainly not her last), Dr. Smith that said book is “the details” of her miniclips. She thought there was something missing in these clips due to format restrictions, so here it is. Fair enough point; This book is an elaboration beyond the “bites” he left behind for the sake of clarity and brevity. And once again he got it right as the book is valuable advice and one to enjoy with or without the mini video clips. So my videos have really been about reminding people and helping them to build that awareness – that if this is impacting you in a negative way, you are one decision away from something different. A growth mindset is when we recognise that our abilities and skills can be developed with practice, learning, and persistent effort. Here is the incredible part. A growth mindset is associated with better academic performance, persistence in the face of a challenge, and better mental health.

Say you’ve been working late, worried about a fast-approaching deadline. You finally make it to bed, but you’re too tired to remember your usual glass of water before sleep. You spend the night tossing and turning, worried about your deadline. You drift into a light, restless sleep – only to be jolted awake by your horribly loud alarm. Now, building this awareness of how feelings are generated won’t bring clarity or solutions to all painful emotions. Some problems are more complex and may require professional help, and that’s OK. But if that’s the case, increased awareness of your feelings and their origins will still help you and your therapist in the joint work of improving your low mood. Take care of your mental health with these bite-size tips on everything from how to manage anxiety to coping with grief Woman & Home When Dr. Julie worked with patients caught in an ongoing low mood, she noticed some common thought patterns. To her patients, it often felt like their low moods came out of nowhere, or that their brains were simply faulty. It seemed like other people were born with the ability to be happy, but for them, it was out of reach. These beliefs prevented them from taking their mental health into their own hands.
