About this deal

The macOS Big Sur operating system is fast and snappy – something you should also see with macOS Monterey if you choose to take advantage of the free upgrade – and apps designed for the M1 hardware run brilliantly. Even older Intel-based apps run well thanks to Apple’s Rosetta 2 tool, and you can also run iOS apps and games, giving you access to thousands of titles. You'll definitely want to pay for Touch ID. It's integrated into the top-right part of the keyboard, just like it is on MacBooks, and it makes logging in to the machine and all your favorite apps and services so much easier. Plus, if you plan to add multiple accounts, as you might want to do on a family computer, each person just needs to hold their finger to the sensor to log in to their respective macOS user profile. The gigabit Ethernet add-on, which is implemented into the power adapter, is also worthwhile; a hardwired internet connection is always more reliable. Testing conducted by Apple in September and October 2023 using pre-production 24‑inch iMac systems with Apple M3, 8-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 8GB of RAM and 256GB SSD, as well as production 3.3GHz 6-core Intel Core i5–based 27-inch iMac systems with Radeon Pro 5300 with 4GB of GDDR6 memory, 8GB of RAM and 512GB SSD. Blender 4.0 Beta tested by rendering a 47.1MB blend file 3D scene utilising software-based ray tracing. Performance tests are conducted using specific computer systems and reflect the approximate performance of iMac. Testing conducted by Apple in September and October 2023 using pre-production 24‑inch iMac systems with Apple M3, 8-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 24GB of RAM and 2TB SSD, as well as production 24‑inch iMac systems with Apple M1, 8-core CPU, 8-core GPU, 16GB of RAM and 2TB SSD, using JetStream 2.1 and Speedometer 2.1 performance benchmarks. Devices tested with a wired network connection on pre-release Safari 17.1. Performance will vary based on usage, system configuration, network connection and other factors.

While these scores aren’t going to make PC gamers with RTX 4090-equipped rigs consider switching, it’s an impressive result for a thin all-in-one PC with integrated graphics. The six-built in speakers get a good workout during games, and music via Apple Music and YouTube sounds fantastic, again impressive due to the thin design of the iMac 24-inch, which limits the kind of speakers you can include. Thanks to macOS Sonoma’s new Game Mode, the iMac also cleverly detects when you’re playing a game and ensures resources are allocated to keep the game running smoothly, while lowering the latency of wireless peripherals such as the PS5 DualSense controller, or AirPods earphones. Playing some bass-thumping retro game music at even below 50% volume threatened to wake my sleeping son at night, so suffice it to say Apple's audio engineers nailed it with the iMac's sound system. Dolby Atmos spatial audio support aside, you can hear every one of the six speakers booming out from beneath the iMac's display. We’re excited to give iMac a big boost in performance with the M3 chip,” said John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering. “Millions of users absolutely love iMac for its stunning design and expansive 24-inch, 4.5K Retina display that’s the perfect size to spread out with all their favourite apps and get things done. And now M3 brings even more speed to everything users do, whether multitasking, creating captivating images and videos, working on a business plan, or playing their favourite games. The new iMac with M3 is incredible for anyone, especially those who haven’t yet upgraded from Intel, providing a giant leap in performance and capabilities only possible with Apple silicon.”

When it comes to our benchmark tests, Apple’s claims about the M3’s impressive performance certainly hold up. In the Cinebench R23 CPU tests, which look at how well the chip’s processor performs, the new iMac with M3 scored 1,897 in single core tests, and 9,796 in multicore tests. This is a big leap over the iMac with M1’s scores, which hit 1,489 and 7,754 respectively in the same tests. Unboxing the new 24-inch iMac isn't any different from the experience I went through last year when I tested Apple's 27-inch version of its all-in-one desktop computer. Yet the two machines feel poles apart. Maybe it's the fact that my partner and I spent a few minutes discussing which new iMac color would look best in the bedroom. Maybe it's the sheer lightweight and slim nature of the machine, or its many color-matching accessories. It just looks so pretty, I want to carve a space for it in my home.

The Technology I Use

Playing Lies of P, a graphically intensive game where timing is everything, the iMac with M3 scored on average 33fps (Frames Per Second) – an impressively playable experience. Shadow of the Tomb Raider also ran well at 36fps, and Total War: Warhammer III, which is quite CPU-intensive due to its complex battles featuring a multitude of units, scored 38.4fps. The M3 chip brings another huge leap in performance to iMac, featuring an 8-core CPU, up to a 10-core GPU, and support for up to 24GB of unified memory. It’s up to 2x faster than the previous generation with M1. 1 Users will feel the speed and power of M3 in everything they do, from multitasking across everyday productivity apps to exploring creative passions like editing high-resolution photos or multiple streams of 4K video. Featuring the next-generation GPU of M3, iMac supports hardware-accelerated mesh shading and ray tracing, providing more accurate lighting, reflections, and shadows for extremely realistic gaming experiences, and making three-dimensional design and creation even faster. With a 16-core Neural Engine and the latest media engine, iMac also delivers blazing machine learning and video performance. As for older apps that don't yet have an M1 version, you should still be able to run these without much issue thanks to Apple’s Rosetta 2 tool, which enables apps made for Intel hardware to run on M1 Macs with a minimum of issues or performance degradation. On the whole, it does an impressive job, and you’d be hard pushed to know if an app was running via Rosetta 2.
