(“Whiskybase”, “we” or “us”, company details below) offers a whisky enthusiasts online platform that provides its members access to the most comprehensive, transparent and trusted resource of whisky bottles and allows and stimulates its members to contribute information about whisky bottles to the platform (“Service”).

Whiskybase B.V. is registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce under no. 52072819. Whether something for yourself or a gift for that ‘special someone’, this combination would make a thoughtful and much appreciated gift.

Arran is known for its malty and cereal character, with subtle notes of citrus and orchard fruits. Though an Island whisky, it’s actually more Highland in style - although their Machie Moor range does provide peated expressions. You are responsible for all activities through your account. By using the Service, and by creating an account you represent, warrant and confirm that you are of legal age. However, when current Managing Director Euan Mitchell came over from Springbank, where he served as its Sales Director, he pushed the company to create a core range of aged-stated releases. Mitchell felt that this move would result in the creation of a constant and recognizable identity that consumers can expect from Arran whisky, an identity that cannot be achieved by their initial preference for experimental finishing.

If we decide not to exercise or enforce any right or provision of these Terms, such decision shall not constitute a waiver of such right or provision. The current core range is a manifestation of the success of that endeavor. As if to put an exclamation mark on their commitment to the creation of that identity, the new core range was extended by the addition of The Bodega, a whisky that also used wine casks but through exclusive maturation, not finishing. Yes, they still continue to release finished whiskies, but it says a lot that they would consider a single malt exclusively matured in a wine cask (and, of course, it had to be Sherry) to be a fixture that they believe consumers can rely on. Arran is a truly independent distillery owned by a small group of shareholders rather than a faceless corporation which is all too rare these days so worth supporting, especially when they produce such lovely whiskies. Our Quarter Cask expression is a complex, rich and intensely fruity Single Malt, a cask strength delight and the perfect partner to our Sherry Cask Single Malt!

The Quarter Cask on the other hand is a perfect go-to dram for an enjoyable evening and is cost effective enough to remove any confirmation bias or not worry too much that it’s depleting rather promptly. I was given this bottle from a pal after he lost a bet, so I have even less financial bias towards it. I had presumed it was young whisky in the four-five year range presented at the higher ABV to deliver more flavour at the compromise of a missing age-statement. The Arran 10 might be the winner of accolades, but this Quarter Cask expression is, to all intents and purposes, a large step up from that great entry point, even if it was young. Now that I know it’s just shy of a decade and, knowing it delivers an elevated, potent flavour experience, that when my bottle of Arran 10 runs out, I’ll be replacing it with another Quarter Cask instead. Mouth: sweet fruity notes again (pineapple, pear, lemon candy) moving towards zesty grapefruit and some chilli and ginger. Coconut again, with a fresh mentholated layer as well. Hints of pencil shavings. Here as well I’m not sure the high ABV is an asset, I prefer it with water. No partnership, joint venture, agency, or employment relationship is created as a result of your use of the Service. Every drop of Arran Single Malt starts its life as rainwater which pools at Loch na Davie in the beautiful hill high above the distillery. The clear water cascades down the hillside, through six unassuming waterfalls, each one purifying the water further. The name of the burn, Easan Biorach, means ‘Sharp Waterfalls’ in Gaelic. The purity of the water means that the distilling team can create a clean, sweet dram which is entirely natural and unadulterated.

Light espresso and a nice faint leather. Limes and light fruits. Chocolate toffees. The usual suspects are in abundance here – vanilla and honey, the fancy exotic stuff that costs double in Sainsbury’s. Scotch broom’s coconut-floral, bushy notes are around the periphery too – my favourite wild plant and in fabulous bloom right now, FYI.The Arran Distillery (now known as the Lochranza Distillery since the construction of the Arran Distillers second distillery – Lagg – in the south of the Isle of Arran) was founded in 1995, which makes it one of the younger distilleries in Scotland. It was the first legal distillery on the Isle of Arran since 1837. It should be noted though, that more than 50 illegal stills were working in various hidden locations on the island in the early 19th century. So whisky production isn’t exactly in the experimental/developmental stage here. In fact, the Islands whisky producers (both legal and illicit) have enjoyed the reputation of producing some of the best whisky in Scotland. The Service has been prepared by us solely for information purposes to Members and the Service is based on information we consider reliable and we obtain the contents of the Service from a number of different third party sources (including Contributions), but we do not endorse, support, represent, warrant or guarantee the completeness, truthfulness, accuracy, or reliability of the Services and any information therein. When I first heard about Arran whisky and tried learning about the brand, I was intrigued by the different contradictions that stood out throughout the course of their history.
