Swiss design is referred to a lot in the design community, but how much do you know about it really? In 1959, design legends Ivan Chermayeff and Tom Geismar produced a small booklet about typographic creativity. Designers in the twentieth- and twenty-first centuries have continued to create new typefaces based on historic characteristics.

More than 320 typefaces are displayed in the form of their original type specimens or earliest printing. Significant speed differences were found for lower-case paragraph-texts set in Georgia and upper-case single line sentences set in Verdana. The book covers all typography essentials, from typefaces and type families, to kerning and tracking, to using a grid. The second describes several ways in which designers invoke symbolic connotation by selecting iconic typefaces. The selection of typefaces used in the examples will be looked at from the point of subject, concept and audience and the principles of the correct usage of typography will be mentioned.
