Through grant assistance this has been achieved at 9,10 and 10a where attention to detail has involved the reinstatement of original tuck-pointing requiring specialist skills. This is a multilayered, insightful and delightful read, cleverly compiled by Elizabeth de Waal, it's hard to believe this book wasn't going to be published at all! There are moments of drama, and a few of farce, tension and a love story, but the main love story is that of a man for his garden, I think, and the joy of the plot is actually found again in the quiet but precise observation – the nuances of an unpleasant and strained atmosphere at the tea table; the contrast between Emily’s inability to notice nature and Anita’s quiet glory in it.Anita I resisted as a character primarily because the narration seemed to assume that she was just so naturally charming and so pleasant and sweet that you as the reader would of course simply adore her as the residents of Milton Place did. The book follows the change in season from the end of winter thought spring and summer, all sumptuously described. DeWaal's observations about 20th century English life, the class system, values and lifestyles is perceptive as an outsider view though she spent many years living there. A trip to Norway has reminded us of the simplicity, functionality, and elegance of domestic design in Scandinavian countries.

Sitting alone everyday with only his memories for company and the occasional visit from his daughters Emily and Cecilia, he is surprised one day when a letter arrives bearing a stamp from Vienna . Spend an afternoon at their café, children’s play area, and take pleasure in the abundance of space for walking and cycling on your doorstep. What also means a lot is the sense of position, responsibility and moral values that are often embodied in an English country estate – if it is well run. Milton Place is rather run down, but is surrounded by beautifully well kept gardens and lush countryside, and the setting harkens to how things used to be while facing the challenges of change and the demands of a new generation.

It is hard to believe that this wonderful novel was turned down by three publishers in the 1960s and left unpublished until now. Glad you enjoyed this one too, I think we may have bought this for each other but I can’t remember either. I highly recommend this to anyone who is an Anglophile; who enjoyed Howard's End and is a fan of Downton Abbey. We strive to create well designed homes, that suit a range of needs, including the evolving lifestyles of the modern home owner.Milton Place, Halifax, HX1 5EW is within the Halifax policing neighbourhood, under the West Yorkshire Police force area. I thought how excited the author would be to see that her work was in print and that her son was responsible for this reveal. of Persephone’s books centre around what happens to the big houses when society has changed and they are too much to keep up.
