About this deal

Low light performance also impresses, with the 1100D able to deliver perfectly usable results right up to its maximum sensitivity setting of ISO 6400, so long as you’re not pixel peeping that is. The camera does an especially good job in the mid ranges too, with ISO 400 to ISO 1600 delivering very good image quality that remains perfectly usable even when viewed at 100%. Verdict The Canon EOS 1100D (also known as the Digital Rebel T3) is the new entry-level model in Canon's extensive range of digital SLR cameras, replacing the 3 year old 1000D model. Aimed at first-time DSLR users, the 1100D inherits features from both the equally new and more expensive EOS 600D and the previous 1000D. It has a 12 megapixel CMOS sensor, 2.7 inch LCD screen, 3fps continuous shooting mode, 9 autofocus points, 63-zone iFCL exposure metering, ISO 100-6400 sensitivity, on-screen Feature Guide, and 720p HD video capture. The digital technology used in cameras has come a long way during the past three years, not least in the development of imaging sensors, the introduction of HD video in stills cameras and improved low-light performance. It seems reasonable to expect the new Canon EOS 1100D to outshine its predecessor on many fronts, given the gap between releases. The introduction of HD video and the extended sensitivity range of the new model are an indication that this might just be the case.

ISO 100-6400 sensitivity: Low-light shooting without flash is possible thanks to the EOS 1100D’s ISO 100-6400 sensitivity range. The camera’s 14-bit DIGIC 4 processor helps to control noise and maintain image quality. All of the sample images in this Review were taken using the 12 megapixel Fine JPEG setting, which gives an average image size of around 5Mb. The EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS kit lens handled chromatic aberrations well during the review. This camera is also incorporated with the Basic+ and Creative Auto Mode. Both these modes allow you to experiment with photography and the shutter speed. This DSLR camera has a fast and accurate 9 point auto focus system, thus giving you sharp images every time. The 9 Point system allows for more creativity as it lets you experiment with photography. The camera also comes with the 63 - zone iFCL exposure metering. Those considering replacing their 1000D with this updated model should note that their current batteries will not work with the 1100D. It has a new battery type, which Canon claims will give 700 exposures on a full charge. Does the 1100D have what it takes to keep up with these beginner-friendly rivals, or even leave them in its wake? Let’s take a closer look and find out… Canon EOS 1100D Features

Canon EOS 1100D review - Amateur Photographer

Luminance noise is well controlled and not too distracting at any point. It is at higher sensitivities and in shadow areas that it is most apparent, but images are very usable even at ISO 1600. The biggest increase in noise levels is at the maximum sensitivity of ISO 6400. Given its particularly strong performance when it comes to noise, combined with a good sensitivity range, the EOS 1100D offers high-quality handheld and flash-free photography, even in low light. The great thing about buying into the Canon DSLR system with a camera like the 1100D is that it opens up a veritable treasure chest of lenses and accessories to choose from at a later date. If you’re new to DSLR photography then rest assured that once you’ve outgrown the kit lens, you’ll be spoilt for choice as to your next optic. The metering modes offered by the camera include Evaluative, Centre-weighted and Partial, which uses 10% of the frame area - the 1100D doesn't have a spot metering option. In use, we found that the Evaluative metering mode provided fairly good exposures with a variety of subjects, thanks to the advanced 63-zone metering sensor. When shooting contrasty scenes, it is worth using the Evaluative mode in conjunction with the Auto Lighting Optimiser feature, accessible by hitting the Q button and using the interactive status panel. When shooting outdoors at night and in tungsten light, it is advisable to use the appropriate white balance preset or take a custom reading because the camera does little to take away the yellow hue. MeteringThe Xiaomi 12T Pro offers a whopping 200MP main camera, but how does this perform, and do the other cameras deliver? Joshua Waller puts it through its paces. Auto depth-of-field mode is designed to keep multiple subjects in focus by measuring the distance from the nearest to the furthest and then calculating an aperture-shutter speed combination with just enough depth-of-field to keep them all sharp. In theory it’s a good idea, especially if you have a group of people at different distances all of whom you’d like to keep in focus. That said, you do need to exercise caution with it and keep a close eye on your ISO settings as the camera may choose a slower shutter speed than you can realistically shoot handheld. In addition, the camera doesn’t always choose the AF points that you want it to.

Image information: Highlight tone priority (D+), monochrome shooting, maximum burst (1 digit display), White balance correction, SD card information The Canon EOS 1100D has a great feature of recording videos in HD at 720 p resolution at 25 and 30 frames per second. The Canon EOS 1100D lets you experiment with several lenses as it is compatible with all EF and EF-S lenses. The focal length range of the 1100D SLR is 18 - 55 mm, while the aperture ranges from f/3.5 - 5.5. There's a host of scene modes including Flash Off, Portrait, Landscape, Sports, Night Portrait and, oddly enough for an interchangeable-lens camera, a close-up mode as well. The majority of these scene modes allow users who do not want to fiddle with shutter speeds, f-stops, white balance or ISO settings to let the camera know what type of photo they are about to take, which helps the EOS 1100D / T3 to optimise these settings for that particular subject. We struggled to see the point of the close-up mode though, as the quality of one's close-up shots depends more on the use of the right kinds of accessory - such as a macro lens and possibly a ring flash - than any camera setting. The new Feature Guide in the EOS 1100D’s menu system usefully provides a brief description of each setting and its effect. zone iFCL exposure metering: Advanced iFCL exposure metering dissects a scene into 63-zones before analyzing it to find the perfect combination of shutter speed, aperture and ISO. Eyecup Ef, E-series Dioptric Adjustment Lens with Rubber Frame Ef, Eyepiece Extender EP-EX15II, Angle Finder CThis overcast scene is served well by some of the picture modes, particularly monochrome, and even the portrait and landscape modes boost the saturation a little Creative Auto mode, meanwhile, is best described as a sort of halfway house between fully auto and more manual modes, with the 1100D allowing you to choose a ‘look’ for your photo and then allowing you to specify how much depth-of-field you want before making all the other calculations for you. As an easy-to-use creative mode it’s certainly useful, although we can’t really see how it helps beginners to learn the fundamentals of photography other than getting them to think about depth-of-field. The Canon EOS 1100D / Rebel T3 is a small and light DSLR camera with an all-plastic shell, weighing in at just under 500g with the battery and memory card fitted and measuring 129.9 x 99.7 x 77.9 mm. In terms of build quality, the Canon EOS 1100D / T3 feels more than solid enough for an entry-level DSLR, on par with the more expensive 600D but as you'd expect not in the same league as the semi-professional EOS 60D and 7D models. It has a narrow, mildly uncomfortable hand-grip that unfortunately doesn't have any textured surface to aid your grip, with the entire body finished in an appealingly glossy but rather too smooth finish. Like all of Canon's APS-C digital SLR cameras, the EOS 1100D / T3 is compatible with the manufacturer's entire line-up of lenses, including both EF and EF-S glass. When changing lenses, EF lenses need to be aligned with the red dot on the lens mount, whereas EF-S lenses must be aligned with the white mark. The hotshoe enables use of EX-series Speedlite flashguns, with E-TTL II wireless multi-flash support.
