About this deal

The main mix output and mic input are on professional standard balanced XLR's, and there is a dedicated record output. The Xone:23 is equipped with comprehensive monitoring facilities, including a booth output with its own volume control, a cue mix control, and signal levels clearly displayed on the 9 segment peak hold meters. It’s the filters where I’m both perplexed and impressed. In most budget mixers, filters are added per channel and operate from low pass to high pass on the same knob. The xone:23 handles it differently in that there is a single filter, assignable to one or both channels, and can be used in low pass or high pass mode universally. There are two filter controls, one that adjusts the frequency from 20Hz to 20kHz, and a resonance control that makes the filter smooth or a lot more lively. In addition to the balanced XLR main outputs, there are booth monitor outputs with top-panel level control and record outputs, both on stereo 1/4-inch pairs. Pros: Perfect size, perfect weight, amazing price, fantastic sound. Analogue Filter! Build quality is great. This is where we need to talk about the difference between two channel mixers and scratch mixers. There is an assumption that two channels = scratch. This is quite wrong, and the xone:23 typifies this perfectly.

Performance

Still on some very silently recorded vinyls Gain is not enough (some 'silent' albums with 20+ minutes on each side). For singles Gain is enough. The components (ie knobs) feel robust. The link of a recording to the laptop is extremely easy to set up and use.

Tech spec

If you like Allen & Heath and want a budget mixer, then really your choice is between this and the Xone:23C, the latter having a built-in sound card. The advantage of going down that route is the (unlike in the accompanying talkthrough video) you won’t need an external sound card for adding a couple of digital channels, but the disadvantage is that if you ever want to use it with a Traktor or Serato DVS, you’ll need one of their sound card anyway, and as the Xone:23C doesn’t have a sound card licensed to either of those set-ups, it’d be redundant. The filter in practice is a lot of fun to use and you don’t actually miss not having two filters; I realised I don’t ever use more than one filter at once in my DJing anyway, and actually a benefit of having a simple filter on/off switch is that you can do an increasingly “wilder” filter effect, then return to “flat” instantly on a beat at the touch of a button, something not possible with a filter solely controlled by a knob as most “omnifilters” nowadays are. Output Levels: From its balanced XLR main outputs, the Xone:23 pumps out a maximum +28 dBu, up from the Xone:22’s +25 dBu.

The Xone:23’s new Alpha up faders offer more resistance, and the user-changeable crossfader with selectable cut and fade curves is compatible with the Mini Innofader. Our A&H demonstrator on the show floor related that all Xone mixers this year will be compatible with Innofader, implying that more Xone mixers are on the way. KEY DIFFERENCES The former Xone:22 (left) and the new Xone:23 (right) The three-band EQ range is kill to +8dB which for the target market is ideal, and sees the mid EQ doing most of the work. Strangely there is no EQ gain knob, but then you remember that each input has its own gain. So it’s not wrong — it’s just different. The Xone series of mixers from Allen & Heath are seen in booths and studios around the world, and they're often the first choice for DJs who expect a certain level of sound quality and features (the great-sounding filters especially). Xone mixers have been made in many different sizes and channel counts over the years. The most recent addition, the Xone:23, is a two-channel, four-input mixer that should appeal to studio usage, portable rigs, bars and battle-style setups that want the same analog quality in a smaller footprint. And its very fair price point should appeal regardless of how you want to use it.
