About this deal

Basically, I wouldn’t make that show now. It would upset people. We made a more cruel kind of comedy than I’d do now,’ Matt told Big Issue in 2017. ‘Society has moved on a lot since then and my own views have evolved.

The best example was when he walked along a beach in Mykonos full of gay men but claimed all of them were straight, despite two of these men kissing openly in public. Alice, a disabled illustrator and full-time wheelchair user felt first-hand how London’s inaccessibility impacted their connection with the queer community as their health worsened. Daffyd constantly attempts to draw attention to himself, even when the situation at hand has absolutely nothing to do with him. As our lives continue to rapidly transform, shift to digital spaces, and new ways of living and working, we have the perfect opportunity to evaluate what happiness and prosperity look like for LGBTQ+ people, whether we want it to continue to be determined by where we live, and whether this is antithetical to the goal of queer liberation for all.

He refused to accept that a new arrival to the village was a gay. He presented him with two questions, thinking that only a real gay man would know the answers to them. The man (and the rest of the pub patrons) answered the questions flawlessly. In an ironic twist, Dafydd had got one of the answers wrong. Dafydd made sure that none of the other residents of Llandewi Breffi heard about a gay rugby match between them and the residents of another village. Even the Captain from the opposing team stated that he knew that there were other gay residents otherwise. His fellow patrons then expressed their disappointment at not knowing as they would love to have played in the game. As a result of this, many Little Britain fans have come to the conclusion that Daffyd is just pretending to be gay and isn't actually homosexual at all. They believe that Daffyd's claims are a result of his narcissistic attitude. Thomas wants to stand out, make everybody pay attention to him and to be viewed/regarded as special.

Outside of support groups, the most common LGBTQ+ community hubs are bars, though these are becoming increasingly few and far between.

Recently, the charity has launched a five-week programme for trans and gender non-conforming people in London focussed on fitness, self-defence, and confidence. But in the next year they are looking to expand their physical events (pandemic conditions allowing) to reach trans people across the UK. Not A Phase will be piloting their Safe Space workshops not only in London, but also in Glasgow, Manchester, and Bristol, creating spaces for trans and gender non-conforming people that are sober, accessible, and offering a variety of activities. I have a lot of reasons for not leaving Norwich,” says Alice. “I grew up here, my whole support system, carers, friends and medical team are here and feel familiar. I have a hard time changing where I live and have a lot of anxiety about being stranded with no help. Still, I am really limited here which can be so frustrating. London is worse in a lot of ways though. I don’t know anyone with an accessible house and public transport is either nonexistent for disabled people or really expensive.” What is striking is that every interviewee reaffirmed the ideas that moving to London was an expectation and a quasi-requirement for being included within the queer community – irrespective of whether living in London is or was an option for them. They are literally building houses with the nuclear family in mind; there are no living options for any queer, non-nuclear or alternative family set-up. They assume that wouldn’t exist”, they share. “And even if I could move from the city and afford it, I would not want to live in a bungalow in the middle of nowhere because people knowing where I live isn’t safe. If it hasn’t been safe for me in London, it definitely won’t be safe there.” As such Dafydd appears to have very few friends outside his family, with the exception of his barmaid Myfanwy, who he later discovers is a lesbian. He is also shown to be very selfish and lazy.

The Frenchman Morali, who was already a bit enamoured by American culture and stereotypes, had a lightbulb go off in his head. He stated in an interview with Rolling Stones, “I say to myself, ‘You know, this is fantastic’—to see the cowboy, the Indian, the construction worker with other men around. And also, I think in myself that the gay people have no group, nobody to personalize the gay people, you know?…” Slovenia; coming out; gay infrastructure; homophobic violence; rural gays and lesbians; rural/urban divide; same-sex partnerships.Thomas took a stand against his local library claiming that they had no books for gays like himself. After creating a small section for himself, the librarian showed him that they already had a gay section, which was very popular. Despite this, given their band was specifically formed by Morali to represent gay subculture, it’s no surprise that not only was their iconic look crafted to reference said culture, but many of their songs are dripping with double-entendres and references that mainstream audiences at the time generally missed, which was a very good thing for the popularity of the band given attitudes of the era in which the band was topping the charts. Despite claiming to be homosexual himself, Dafydd is actually a very homophobic person. He will also get angry whenever people are not homophobic towards him. This works both ways, however, as whenever an opportunity does present itself Dafydd will treat people as if they had made harsh comments about him. Notable examples include: -

It was 1977, and we were leaving a photography session on 23rd Street. Jacques Morali saw the big pink YMCA on 23rd and asked, “What is this YMCA, anyway? “And after laughing at his accent, we told him the Y was a place where you could go when you first came to New York when you didn’t have any money — you can stay there for very little. And of course, someone joked, “Yeah, but don’t bend over in the showers. “And Jacques, bless his heart, said, “I will write a song about this!” Matt said he knows the character has been used as a tool to bully young gay people, but insists that was not the show’s intention. The good, clean fun at the surface level of the lyrics means that ‘Y.M.C.A.’ has this incredible capacity to circulate in different contexts. If people really thought they were singing about gay hook-ups in the steam room, they would not necessarily participate. Oftentimes, LGBTQ+ people are faced with what can feel like an obligation to move to the city to find community, but this fails to consider the inaccessibility of cities for many. Morali was inspired to write the song after seeing the letters on the side of a building and asking what they meant. Band member David Hodo (construction worker) later recalled,Rural environments are not inherently harmful to LGBTQ+ people in the same way that urban environments are not inherently welcoming by sheer virtue of having a greater population density and number of buildings. Photography by Meg McGrady for their project on queers and rurality, Away With The Fairies Whilst Dafydd can be shown to be friendly and civil at times, he loses his temper and gets angry quite frequently. He is also known to be very dramatic especially about his sexuality. Dafydd, of course, likes to put emphasis on his homosexuality and will bring it up at any opportunity. Despite this, Dafydd does not like to socialise with gay people, doesn't catch on when people are gay or get involved in homosexual activities. Daffyd Thomas has been the subject of much debate amongst the Little Britain fandom. Throughout the shows running, Daffyd always claimed that he was both homosexual and "the only gay in the village". Just like the residents of Llandewi Breffi, fans know for a fact that the latter statement is clearly not true. Instead, they question the validity of Daffyd's homosexual claims. Many fans have pointed to several of Daffyd's noticeable traits and actions, which, in their opinion, contradict his homosexual claims. These include; -
