According to an October 7, 2016 publication by The Hollywood Reporter, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was set to be remade into a television series by the film's producer, Steve Golin, with involvement from Universal Cable Productions. Often delving into surreal, unconventional subject matter, Kaufman has for decades proven reality and humans fragile, complicated things. Kaufman did not want to make the film a thriller and wanted to downplay the science fiction aspects of memory erasure, focusing on the relationship. We now understand that Stan and Patrick are in Joel's apartment to erase Clementine from his memory. In the final film, Winslet plays Clementine straight, and degradation of settings and the intrusion of settings upon each other establish memory degradation visually.

I rate this shooting script a three out of five stars because although the idea is on the page, it really cannot be experienced fully without the visual. She insists that they go to the Charles River immediately, and Patrick gives her a gift - the gift that Joel purchased for her and relinquished to Lacuna when he decided to have Clementine erased. Due to the similarities, Kaufman became worried and tried to pull out of the project, but Golin made him complete it. I found that the analysis of the movie as a comedy of remarriage really added a lot to how I see the film. When it comes to the truth about Joel and Clementine (that they have met before), Kaufman carefully parses out what is need to connect the dots.Now, the audience knows that Joel and Clementine have already gone through a doomed love affair and are meeting in Montauk for the second time without knowing it. This is not so much a companion to the nominally SF Charlie Kaufman/Michael Gondry film as a blueprint for unravelling a visual brainteaser.
