I was hoping to read more about how he met his fiancé, Sharla, but he didn't go into that. Apart from that, I thoroughly enjoyed. So yes, I recommend. It’s exactly what I expected - full of fry humour mixed with cool facts about Japan. When I was reading it, it felt like Chris was reading it in my head (his audiobook is coming out in September).acast (4 April 2018). Disclaimer: I'm a long time Chris fan, have been watching his videos since the 1st Journey Across Japan. What I mean is that I do not need an audiobook to be able to imagine him narrating all of this and I'm familiar with a lot of the moments shared in this book. Atsuko Matsumoto (13 July 2019). The author, Chris Broad, is happy to embrace the good of the country and culture he immersed himself in, as well as the bad, the problematic and the downright strange! The hilarious and insightful memoir of a Brit trying assimilate into life in Japan. Over ten years we follow Chris Broad as he unravels the wonders and eccentricities of one of the world's most mysterious cultures, rising from underqualified English teacher to YouTube sensation in the process. A note about the writing style: Chris writes the way he talks. This makes sense since he's spent the last decade writing scripts, not books. When you are reading you'll hear the entire thing as though he's narrating it. I didn't mind this, although some areas of the books read like a video script, and could use some polish. The book is well written, as I said, definitely in Chris's own voice. I laughed, I could picture his descriptions and almost taste the food, I even almost teared up when he wrote about saying goodbye to his teacher friends. Even if you are unfamiliar with Chris and his channel, you could still enjoy this book if you are interested in Japan.

Your audience is waiting". YouTube. 18 May 2017. Archived from the original on 15 January 2020 . Retrieved 17 December 2018. I found this book really interesting with useful advice that will be of use to anyone who plans to live in or visit Japan. Chris does a great job of not sugar coating his experiences, and will highlight the positives and negatives of Japanese culture. McDonald's Japan's chocolate covered fries: 'it works' – video review". The Guardian. 28 January 2016. Archived from the original on 22 January 2021 . Retrieved 3 December 2020. The book cover Chris's stay in Japan from arriving as a rookie English Teacher in a rural part of Japan to accidentally becoming viral and eventually becoming a famous Youtuber. Along the journey he meets some good friends (Natsuki) and has some sorry heartbreaks (like the Love hotel chapter which is tragically comic and a standout). He doesn't shy away from his struggles assimilating into the famously insular Japanese culture as a Gaijin (foreigner). He portrays and confronts his vulnerabilities, his fear and his anxieties very well with his typically sarcastic, punny and witty British humour that had me laughing out loud in several places. This rarely happens (unless it is Michael Palin and his adventures - this book compares favorably to him). Also because it is a memoir and a slice of life in Japan, I also could see that it can be a good contemporary companion book to Pico Iyers The lady and the Monk: Four Seasons in Kyoto, which I absolutely loved. On 31 May 2018, Broad released the documentary film Natsuki: The Movie telling the story of Broad and his friend Natsuki's journey to Europe. [16] [17]
