About this deal

I love it, but I can understand how this is not the favourite of all people especially seeing how illogical the entire storyline is. The video could be stopped at various points and children could be asked to find triangles in the picture. When will they receive half the penguins? What day is halfway through the year? (being an odd number, students will have to decide that is half way through the 182nd day.) We read about some problems of having too many penguins in one household. For examples, they occupied the bathroom too frequently, they became restless when summer came, they were very noisy, they stink, and they ate too many fishes. The illustrations are hilarious. Amy the sister went crazy, the mum was always in action solving out the instant problems in the household, the dad was always thinking of how to resolve the penguin issues with mathematical solutions and formulae, while the little boy seemed to be the only one enjoying the whole ridiculous situation of a massive crowd of penguins. The next organization method is to put the penguins in a dozen boxes of a dozen each. The book asks the reader how many penguins this is. (The answer is hidden in the illustration, upside down on a calculator.) The boxes for the penguins are all labeled: “1->12,” “13->24,” “25-36,” etc.Follow the life of a little penguin in this extraordinary picture book. Watch as the little penguin hatches from an egg between his father’s feet, faces natural predators, survives in the harsh, icy climate, and finally cradles an egg between his feet, where his own little penguin hatches. Penguins is a 2006 children's book by Jean-Luc Fromental and illustrated by Joelle Jolivet which tells the story of a family who receives a penguin each day for a year. It was a Boston Globe-Horn Book Honor Award winner.

Swiss comedian and cabaret artist Ursus Wehrli loves organisation in the extreme. In The Art of Clean Up, Wehrli arranges a bowl of alphabet soup, a group of pool-goers, a spruce branch, and other elements of our chaotic world into neat rows sorted by colour, size, shape or type. The storyline is nonsensical. A delivery man brought one parcel each day (with a new penguin) to a family of 4. It all began on the New Year's Day, and the penguin didn't stop coming until the last day of the year. So, 365 penguins in total living in the same house with the eccentric family that tried their best to accommodate these little (but not too little) intruders. At the end of January they have received 31 of 365 penguins. How do we write that as a fraction? That is about what as an easier fraction? Investigate more calendar fractions by dividing the year into terms, seasons, number of lunar cycles etc. Talk about places in the world where the year is divided into halves: wet and dry seasons. n this delightful, rhythmic sequel to One Odd Day, the young boy awakens to find that it is another strange day, now everything is even, and his mother has two heads! This time, a school field trip to the zoo is dealt with in an odd, but even-handed manner. And, like its predecessor, children will spend hours looking for all the hidden objects in the incredible art. Square it all off with more "number fun" in the "For Creative Minds" section. Learning Magazine's 2008 Teachers' Choice AwardIn one minute, you can blink your eyes twenty times, hug your dog, plant seeds, say good-bye, watch the rain, or even save a life. So much can occur in this sliver of time—one minute can feel like a singular experience. This poignant picture book is at once an introduction to time for young readers, an ode to living each moment with purpose, and a thoughtful exploration of how children experience one minute (may it seem short or long) playfully, profoundly, and with a boundless sense of possibility. Gilbert the penguin has always wanted to fly. But with only small, fluffy wings as his aid, learning to fly is a bigger challenge than he ever thought it would be. The other penguins tell Gilbert there’s no use, and that he’ll never be able to fly, but Gilbert is determined and won’t let any obstacle stand in his way. There’s a pretty far-fetched reason (related to global warming) a the end for why the family had ended up with 365 penguins over the course of the year. The book knows its far-fetched, but it was still my least favorite part of the book. The ecological message is weak at best and probably undermined by the rest of the book (the penguins being in an unideal environment, etc.). But for me, the mathiness makes up for that.

Blue Penguin is left all alone. Can he think of a way to convince the other penguins that he’s like them, after all? Throughout the book, the family organizes the penguins in a number of different ways. When there are sixty of them, they make four pyramids of fifteen penguins. The narration states that four times fifteen is sixty. Depending on the age of the reader, though, it won’t be obvious that the pyramids contain fifteen penguins, so it would be interesting to stop there and talk about the pyramids. A family are somewhat bemused when they receive a gift of a penguin on January 1st. Then another one arrives the next day, and another on the third. So it goes, as a new penguin arrives every day for a year. Needless to say, this involves the family in all sorts of problems - how does one care for so many penguins?! - but it also presents some opportunities for fun mathematical problems. In the end, the mystery of who is sending these avian guests is resolved...Math is not really my favorite or my best subject, but my niece loves math, so I thought she would enjoy that aspect of the story as well. I think that she actually found it somewhat interruptive, though, and wasn't interested in being pulled out of the story to solve a math problem. In the end I just read the story and let her appreciate it as a story. I did like the author's attempt to show kids real-world applications for math, since a common refrain is "when am I ever going to use this?!" It's off to a picnic we go! One hundred very hungry ants hurry to sample the delights of a picnic, but marching in single file seems too slow for 100 empty tummies. The smallest ant of all suggests they travel in 2 rows of 50, four rows of 25 . . . and the division begins. One Hundred Hungry Ants is not only a spirited and whimsical story, but also serves as an enjoyable visual introduction to math.
