About this deal

Ambient effects are myriad, whether it is the chatter in a pub, the hoot of orcs in the mines, birds or a single chirp of a cricket in Rivendell, there always seems to be something to turn your head. Things can feel a tad bit different in terms of clarity in some scenes more than others, feeling sharper than others that feel softer. I don’t care how amazing you thought the sound was before on Blu-ray or even during the theatrical showings, this is superior and just unlike anything you have experienced this film in.

I’m also pleased to add that there does not appear to have been any attempt to “upgrade” or “redo” the VFX in this film with newer, revised CG effects (in some kind of Star Wars: Special Edition effort). Are you looking forward to adding these long awaited 4K versions of Jackson’s classic Middle-earth trilogies to your collection. You cannot, however, cannot, I repeat, cannot watch iTunes Extras (currently) in the AppleTV app on devices such as Roku or some TV sets. Things can truly get intense during the large battle scenes, especially when swords start swinging and orcs or humans in armies are present. This is Dolby Atmos at its absolute finest and one of the most impressive sets of mixes in the sound format that I have heard to date. The poor-ish, inconsistently color-graded, visually outdated images of Lord of the Rings work—in a very literal, but also cosmic, sort of way—because they look, by contemporary standards, imperfect. This still manages to hold a light amount of film grain, as I’ve seen with some other Super 35 source material when it comes to 4K.

Perhaps equally as important, remove the smooth motion “soap opera” effect also in your TV’s settings. These are things that honestly most consumers will not even notice or complain about, but then again, that’s my job to point these things out. Do keep in mind, I’m in no way trying to tell you the story of these films but really only cover the characters and cast. By fine-tuning his images, by increasing their resolution, Jackson is making the patterns easier to perceive. Or un-optical, as it were, since optics are the new ethics, at least in corporate America, where all they do is seek clarity on this, visibility into that. But please, before you watch LOTR in 4k or 4k with HDR, switch to movie or film mode on your Ultra HD TV. The work Jackson and company put into this restoration clearly shows, and there's every chance it will bring new viewers into the fold while helping existing fans recapture the feeling of experiencing Middle Earth for the very first time. The colors are represented in a very lifelike manner across all of the films and their two versions. The critics were even kinder to the second film and it also carries a “Certified Fresh” rating over at Rotten Tomatoes.

Finally, here’s are trailers for the films in 2160p 4K with HDR on YouTube to get you ready for the next bit, video quality. Each one of these three films, in either their theatrical or extended version, proves to be pure “demo material” from start to finish. He’s de-blurring the meaning behind the shuffled deck, sculpting richer life from the mud of the past. It would end up winning a total of two Oscars in the categories of “Best Sound Editing” and “Best Visual Effects. And I don't mind telling you, dear reader, that in this presentation, with this picture and sound, I felt the same euphoria as I felt when I first saw the film in the cinema; perhaps the only film do actually do this. I never get tired of watching it, indeed, it seems to get better with every watch, there is so much to every scene; a truly magnificent piece of film making. Home Entertainment has announced that Peter Jackson’s The Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit trilogies will finally be available on 4K disc from 30th November. For the week that ended on March 20th, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment's The Croods: A New Age topped both the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts for the fourth week in a row, with Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's Monster Hunter coming in second .
