About this deal

Which I never thought I could love so much? Who would’ve thought illustrations of baked goods, as well as baked goods being prepped could make you feel like you were being hugged by the author & illustrator themselves? Literally, it confounds me that I love those panels SO much, haha. But here we are.) Ari and Hector spend all their time together at the bakery with their friends, go for walks together…

What’s really refreshing is that this is not a coming out story, there is no gay-angst to deal with. The details are focused on the emotional complexities of youthful romance without the shadow of gay-shame. Panetta has said he “wanted to write a story about rejecting cynicism and learning to be earnest and loving. It’s something I struggled with as a jerky teenager and I’m much happier being on the other side of it!” Ari tries to solve her problems by hiring someone for the bakery, and at that point, Hector enters, who is in town to fix his grandmother who died, but who is studying cooking.

Need Help?

AHHH there really was so much to this book that only made it more & more exceptional as it progressed. And it succeeds, gorgeously. Written by Kevin Panetta with artwork by Savanna Ganucheau, Bloom is a coming of age tale that aspires to and obtains a rare emotional reality. Bloom is the story of Ari, not quite an adult but no longer a child, toiling away in his parents’ bakery for one last summer before moving “to the city,” a plan exactly as vague and ill-conceived as it sounds. His older sister has married and gone, leaving him hamstrung by a guilty sense of obligation. Ari is in a band—this is what he plans to do with his life—and other than that, his main pursuit is to find his own replacement, a search that brings him to Bloom’s other central character, Hector. Ari and Hector then fall in love while working at the bakery. Mistakes are made, things get complicated, there is growth. That’s essentially it. It’s a slice of life story that succeeds by feeling both urgent and immersive.

What frustrated me is that Ari, the character who is working in his dad's bakery, is a selfish, self-absorbed, whiny, immature, pouting little brat. And I'm supposed to think Hector falls in love with him!!!!I would recommend this book to anyone in middle school and up, especially people who enjoy a cute summer love story. This book is mainly targetedtoa young adult audience, but I believe it can be appreciated by a wider audience. Another key target audience would be students, especially recent grads. This book highlights key issuesstudentsare going through, while remaining lighthearted, which could behelpful.Families mayalsofind this book resourceful if they are wanted to normalize queer relationships within their family unit.Including books that elevate this representation is important and can be done easily within the home. However, churches may not find this book as helpful within their curriculum as it is a fiction novel and does not have theological themes, butitmay be a good book to keep inmindas arecommendationto younger readers.Overall, this is a fantastic read that cultivates a wide array of representation in a beautiful way.

Y yo no las he olvidado, señor Kevin Panetta. Bloom is a charming and compelling look at the first summer after high school, with the angst of choice and decision looming and the blush of first love. (Plus: there's baked goods!)"

Graphic novels may not be for everyone. Honestly, I might have thought I was one of those people until I read Bloom. It put a smile on my face and charmed me completely. Can you really ask for anything more from a book? Ganucheau's illustrations are absolutely beautiful, and they are full of emotion and life. At times I found myself re-reading portions of the book so I could spend some time concentrating on the illustrations. This is a simple story, but it had so much heart, and I found myself rooting for Ari and Hector's relationship to flourish, even when Ari screwed things up.Het contrast tussen de twee hoofdpersonen is groot. Mix in lots of baking, romance, and a look at how Ari’s parents fell in love and we’ve ended up with a story that we’re really excited to share with everyone! I mean you already had sold me at graphic novel gays, but uhm carbs ( carbs = both the love of my life, & the bane of my existence) ALSO did NOT HURT, i’ll tell you what. ) Beautiful artwork depicts characters coping with life’s increasing responsibilities and is especially sumptuous when focusing on the yummy desserts. This is both a delicious foray into the world of baking and young love and an endearing, realistic tale of two teens helping one another grow. A fresh take on the coming-of-age story that spotlights the triumphs and travails of young people." —School Library Journal, starred review
