That said, I did actually like the plot and this book would have probably gotten a higher rating if written by a better writer; someone who can develop characters better and leave out an obscene amount of sexist bullshit.

An explosive story of East End violence, the terrors of prison life and the pursuit of justice against all odds, with a heroine whose heartbreaking story will stay with you forever In 2011 Cole founded her own record label, Hostage Music. The London-based band Alabama3 has signed up to the label. [12] Personal life [ edit ] Susan Dalston, the prologue tells us, has murdered her husband, is in prison and is being transferred between prisons pending an appeal against her sentence. This is an appeal that she doesn't intend to go through with, it's just a means of getting closer to her family for a few weeks to make visits easier. Pemberton, Max (27 October 2013). "Martina Cole's arthritis is the real crime". The Telegraph . Retrieved 5 November 2015. Banged up in Holloway, all that keeps her sane is knowing that her children are now safe from the man who terrorised them. The author really understands her characters and spends a lot of time in their heads. This allows us to understand their motivations, simple as they may be. With the story taking place within a certain era there's some outdated misogynist language used throughout.

Two Women” is a modern masterpiece, a powerful novel that can be read on its own. This novel is written by Martina Cole. She is a true storyteller, and Two Women is her best book. It’s an epic tale of family, secrets, loss, marriage, betrayal, friendships, laughter, and regrets. Two Women is a heartfelt novel written with compassion and hope, reconciling the past to pave a road to happiness and second chances. She married for the first time aged 16, but the marriage only lasted a year. She had her first child at the age of 18. [3] Her parents both died when she was in her early 20s.

Most of her novels feature a female protagonist or antihero, and some take place within the Irish community in and around London. [4] The characters in this novel bring life and heart to this story, each with a distinct voice and personality. They made reader love them, they made reader sad, they made reader angry, they made reader laugh, they made reader cry, and they made reader believe in the promise of love and home. It is an extraordinary piece of work, a perfect balancing act with terror on one side and love on the other. This exceptionally well-written novel is all about suspense, thrill and drama, including the relationships between generations and what happens between long-standing friends. The dialogue is excruciatingly unrealistic. The author doesn't use contractions, so the sentences sound completely false. This is the same as Lynda La Plante. I suspect that Martina may have used Prime Suspect as her template for writing and thought that that was how to write dialogue. Again, where was the editor? This is a strong family drama that focuses entirely on relationships, and some of those are quite interesting.

The characters are sensitively portrayed, as is their recovery, and the hopeful ending is realistic. Readers of domestic dramas will be enthralled. For those who love gritty, somewhat nasty mysteries with weird, and an exotic setting in one of the world’s most famous cities, this thriller mystery will satisfy. It is perfect for a long plane trip or a rainy weekend. Details About Two Women by Martina Cole PDFWith believable characters and a strong storyline this novel treated sexual, physical and mental abuse with realistic brutality and yet the characters kept their dignity and respect throughout. There is no real plot, so if you aren't interested in lots of swearing and EastEnders type family rows, it's not for you. But I persevered. The book was gripping and it showed how good Martina Cole is at analysing human behaviour. Yes, she uses the criminal world as an example and as a metaphor, but shows how we are all guilty, to some extent, of justifying our hardships, finding excuses for our bad habits, frustrations, deflecting, assigning blame etc. A four-part TV adaptation of Dangerous Lady was broadcast on ITV in 1995, and in 1998 ITV broadcast a four-part adaptation of The Jump. The Take was serialised on British television on Sky1 in June 2009, which starred Tom Hardy as Freddie. Sky1 has also commissioned an adaptation of The Graft, which has yet to go into production. [7] In the beginning, I had mixed feeling about the book, but as I caried on reading, I realised it was the characters that were causing those feeling. The book is great and so are the characters. My initial problem was that their world is so different to my world. I find it easier to identify myself with Star Wars characters, wizard or time travellers than with gangsters and all their habits.

menos mal que luego de tanto sufrimiento susan pudo tener su libertad, rodearse de sus hijos, amigos y pareja. Susan interrupted her acidly "One hundred and fifty two times with a claw hammer? Yes, I did, I counted the blows, it gave me something to focus on." Martina Cole: Always look on the dark side of life". The Telegraph. 11 October 2008 . Retrieved 5 November 2015.Cole is one of the worst writers I've read in a while. The only style she has to speak of is a tendency to repeat herself and treat the reader like an idiot. Yes, Ms. Cole, I can remember what happened two chapters ago, thank you; there's no need to keep reminding me. She has no idea what characterisation or character development are. Her characters don't learn or grow; they're the same from start to finish. This is a violent world and the language is authentic - the rhyming slang is used appriately and naturally. I only wish I had used a notebook at the start to collect all the phrases. As is quite usual with Martina Cole novels, we find out the ending, or near ending, in the prologue and the rest of the novel takes us from an early point, through a desparately hard life to the point where we meet the prologue again. It's been years since I last read a Martian Cole novel and I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed this dark gritty readable gangster thrillers.
