I have a theory that the Bird Woman is Poppins’s alter ego: despised and destitute, the mad old bat whom women like PL Travers were expected to become – invisible, husbandless and in need of a chin wax. She is the crone in the snow globe whom Poppins compels us to see.

The film, Mary Poppins, did a great job of making this series of imaginative scenes pop off the screen-- whereas, in print, they are not nearly as much fun. Mary Poppins is an enigma, a special person full of special magic (a good witch?) -- The parents in the book are pretty much removed from EVERYTHING going on. The scene in the bank (in the film) isn't in the book, but obviously was gleaned from conversations with Travers.Unlike the Banks family in Disney's film adaption, the middle-class Banks family in Travers's books struggles financially and lives in "the smallest house in the Lane,” which is “rather dilapidated and needs a coat of paint," according to the New Yorker. Each book inevitably includes some mention of stars, constellations and figures of Greek/Roman mythology. This didn't bother me so much, as each time it was approched in a different way. A child Christmas shopping, a trip into space, a statue coming to life and a Midsummer's Eve excursion to collect herbs. It was well done. Familiar to anyone who has seen the film or the West End adaptation, you can now read all six of these wonderfully original tales about Jane and Michael’s adventures with the magical Mary Poppins. In each book Mary takes the children on the most extraordinary outings: to a fun fair inside a pavement picture; to visit Uncle Andrew who floats up to the ceiling when he laughs; on a spectacular trip to see the Man-in-the-Moon! With her strict but fair, no-nonsense attitude, combined with amazing magical powers, things are never straightforward with Mary Poppins! But she has only promised to stay until the wind changes… Goods that by reason of their nature, cannot be returned - (Items such as underwear, where the 'hygiene patch' has been removed, or cosmetics where the seal has been broken).

Mary Poppins was very vain and liked to look her best. Indeed, she was quite sure that she never looked anything else. Reginald Owen as Admiral Boom, the Banks' eccentric neighbor and a naval officer. He has his first mate, Mr. Binnacle, fire a cannon from his roof every 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.Full Moon" -- I think this is where the "Mary Poppins is a Satanist" comes from, haha! And, I admit, it was a very, very odd chapter. I was not really a fan and yet, I could appreciate elements and might have liked it as a kid. It's very cool how the animals through a birthday party for Mary. The part with the people in the zoo was very weird and creepy, to me--then again, I think maybe Travers was trying to say how it's not so nice to keep animals in cages, either and I totally dig that message. I wonder if that is why she used snakes as the party-leaders, too--because they ARE so badly viewed by most people and she wanted them to be seen as nice and interesting creatures who love Mary Poppins and whom she loves in return? In any case, it was a very bizarre chapter but I certainly don't think Mary Poppins is a Satanist!!!
