Searching his apartment, Batman is inadvertently aided by a cop who shows him a carpet cutting tool which Riddler had murdered the mayor with at the beginning. Realizing this tool is another clue to uncovering the Riddler's master plan, Batman cuts open the rug of the apartment and discovers via a map drawn on the floor underneath that Nashton has stationed car bombs around Gotham. No sooner has he done this than an online video of Nashton's final transmission before his capture and incarceration plays, explaining gleefully that he had cultivated an online following that plans to assassinate mayor-elect Bella Reál. Artist Bernie Wrightson provided the visuals for Batman: The Cult and paired with Starlin’s writing they are incredible. Wrightson was a master of the macabre, having worked on various horror titles (he also co-created Swamp Thing), and his illustrations in Batman: The Cult are superb. In the mid-1970s, Starlin contributed a cache of stories to the independently published science-fiction anthology Star Reach. Here he developed his ideas of God, death, and infinity, free of the restrictions of mainstream comics publishers' self-censorship arm, the Comics Code Authority. Starlin also drew "The Secret of Skull River", inked by frequent collaborator Al Milgrom, for Savage Tales #5 (July 1974). When Marvel Comics wished to use the name of Captain Marvel for a new, different character,[citation needed] Starlin was given the rare opportunity to produce a one-shot story in which to kill off a main character. The Death of Captain Marvel became the first graphic novel published by the company itself. In über 70 Jahren hat Batman viele Wandlungen erfahren und die heutigen Comics bieten eine große Menge unterschiedlicher Zeichenstile von fast klassisch bis sehr modern. Als ich auf The Cult stieß, war ich begeistert zu lesen, dass der Großmeister der b/w-Horrorgeschichten aus den 60igern Bernie Wrightson diese Graphic Novel gezeichnet hat und habe den Band sofort bestellt. Since then, always trying to hurt Gotham City, and each time, bigger and bigger his ambitions and the scope of his plans… This is the weirdest Batman story I have ever read, and I have very mixed feelings about it (some spoilers ahead). This story also requires you to suspend your disbelief and buy into the fact that an army of homeless people armed with a few guns and a bunch of knives/blunt objects easily defeated the army and a special forces unit by taking potshots at them from the sewers/building windows.Not matter if you’re fan of Batman or not, if you wanted something out of your usual Batman’s story, where he’s not in total control, where he’s not having the upper hand, where he’s not prepared to the challenge, where he’s a fallible man… Tranquilizer Darts: Batman and Robin use hundreds of them during their return to Gotham. They even use them in rifles and turrets. Of course they all cause Instant Sedation. Interestingly, The Cult also features Jason Todd as Robin and is most likely the only Todd trade outside of A Death in the Family. For once he's not annoying. This is certainly his strongest performance, one last hoorah before death.

Batman: The Cult is a four-issued limited series published in DC's prestige format. Each issue of the series features a raised cover. But we see the GCPD fail, the National Guard fail, and Batman fail, to defeat simplistic tactics by homeless people with guns and knives. It's such bad plotting because these hurdles could’ve been jumped by any one of them if they actually behaved as they would rather than how Starlin wants them to. And the Army don't get involved because a newsreader (there's an abundance of newsreaders overused throughout to serve as both narrators and the Greek chorus - they become a hindrance to the flow of the story and tedious to read long before the end) informs us the President thinks it would be too costly to send the Army into a city in mainland US soil that's under siege! Riiiight, so if a major US city were held hostage, the government would write it off and allow it its own sovereignty? I realise “Dark Knight Rises” has this as a big part of its story but at least with the film there were large stakes – a nuclear bomb – as opposed to thousands of homeless people wandering the streets.

The Others: Not sure about this one. It seemed to hold together as a story while I was reading it, but on analysis the holes are… maddening. Maybe they were supposed to be. Zum Inhalt will ich nicht viel sagen, es handelt sich um eine durchaus komplexe Handlung, die den Namen Graphic Novel verdient. Insgesamt sehr düster, aber das ist bei Batman nicht ungewöhnlich. Dass die Story sehr kontrovers aufgenommen wurde und warum dem so war, läßt sich im Internet gut nachlesen. When this series came out in 1988 I was newly married, finishing college and working two jobs. I had made a half-hearted decision to stop buying comics. When I read this Jim Starlin series, I hated it. It was the catalyst for me to stop buying comics.

Weeks have passed since the incident and the Gotham City Police Department have noticed Batman's absence. Robin often spends the nights at Commissioner Gordon's office trying to find a clue that would help them locate their missing friend, only to realize something major is happening in Gotham City. Batman: The Cult is a four-issue comic book miniseries. It was published by DC Comics in their Prestige Format and released in 1988. It was written by Jim Starlin, illustrated by Bernie Wrightson, colored by Bill Wray and edited by Denny O'Neil.

Batman is pushed to his breakable limits as a religious madman converts Gotham's homeless into a zealous killing force. Batman himself it captured, tortured, broken, and brainwashed into joining this deranged cult. That is just the beginning of this brutal and grim tale of the dark knight.
