About this deal

Like the Tab Ultra, there’s a 16MP rear camera on the Tab Ultra C too. Its main task is to help you scan documents and it does that well enough, but not consistently enough. The good thing about the scans are that they’re in full, saturated color… once you’ve shared them to yourself via Dropbox, Boox Drop or cable transfer (or any other method – you link you Google Drive and OneDrive accounts).

I’ve had the Onyx Boox Tab Ultra C for a while and, during my testing, I’ve had a firmware update rolled out. I began my testing from scratch after this update, in case there were new features or improvements to performance. All told, I spent two months with the device before I started writing my review and used the Kindle Scribe and Onyx's own Note Air2 Plus at the same time to make comparisons. The Tab Mini C uses an unspecified 8-core, 2GHz processor, similar to the Tab Ultra C. It has 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage, which is plenty of space if you want to read standard books, though color content typically consumes more storage. For a tablet, 64GB is a little low. The Tab Mini C also has Bluetooth 5.0 for listening to audiobooks or music (the single speaker is not great) and 802.11a/b/g/ac Wi-Fi.You can technically watch videos on the Tab Ultra C, but I wouldn’t recommend it. Even set to its fastest mode, the E Ink screen can’t keep up with 30fps video, looks unnatural, is prone to ghosting (when a screen shows a faded afterimage of what was previously on it), and shows muted colors. It’s impressive that the Boox even tries, but it simply isn’t as good as an LCD or OLED screen for moving images. There is native support for synchronising notebooks and files with Boox Cloud, Dropbox, Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, Baidu Cloud, Nutstore, and other WebDAV-compatible cloud services. Anyone wanting to take advantage of cutting-edge features and technology (such as a colour screen, Super Refresh, keyboard support and the OCR camera) and intends to use it for more than simply reading and note-taking. HARDWARE The Tab Ultra C, like the Tab Ultra, employs a 50% thinner touch layer to bring content closer to the screen, allowing users to sense less gap under the glass screen on top and have a clearer vision and more responsive touching experience. Work Profile is a new feature that comes with the Tab Ultra C's V3.3.2 BOOX firmware. It is also offered in some of our models.

While it’s smaller than the Tab Ultra C, I still found the Tab Mini C to be comfortable for reading both books and comics in testing. The lower resolution means color comic art isn’t as sharp as manga is, but it’s still quite readable. The nearly eight-inch screen offers much more real estate than the 6-inch Kindle Paperwhite or Kobo Clara 2E, where (monochrome) comics can look too cramped. The adjustable front light makes it easy on the eyes, but be aware that setting the light to a warmer hue will skew the already limited colors. Unlike its competitors however, the Tab Ultra does let you choose between several refresh modes, helping to speed things up if you’re taking on more demanding tasks and ensuring that the screen doesn’t get too cluttered with the ghosting effect that you usally see on an e-ink display. The Kaleido 3 screen is E Ink's most recent ePaper color screen. It offers a relatively high refresh rate, relaxing hues, and is ready for mass production with consistent quality. And with E Ink ComfortGaze™ on the Kaleido 3, a new front light technology, the Tab Mini C with adjustable front lights can offer a comfortable viewing experience day and night. It’s also worth mentioning that the Tab Ultra doesn’t use the same paper-like coating above the display that can be found on the Remarkable 2. While this doesn’t ruin the note-taking experience by any means (in fact it’s a faster experience overall on the Tab Ultra), it doesn’t get quite as close to the feeling of pen and paper that the Remarkable is able to achieve. The bad news is that the color variety and saturation are poor. The E Ink Kaleido 3 screen supports 4,096 different colors in addition to 16 levels of gray. That's magnitudes fewer than the 16.8 million hues available in basic 8-bit color found on other screen technologies. Greens, reds, and blues are all there and, unlike in grayscale, you can tell them apart, but they don’t come close to recreating the brightness or vibrancy of LCD or OLED screens. Thus, reading any comic on the E Ink screen is like reading it on faded newsprint.

BOOX is committed to providing free firmware updates for all models for more than 3 years since the product launch date. So every BOOX user can get improved experiences through consistent updates.

Internally, there's an octa-core Snapdragon processor from Qualcomm with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The microSD slot supports cards up to 2TB in capacity. Even if you skip the memory card, there's plenty of onboard storage for apps, books, comics, music, and more. Modestly Colorful However, the onboard GPU, coupled with Boox’s proprietary Super Refresh technology on the Boox Tab product line does mitigate this to some extent For video, use your phone. The Ultrafast mode can certainly show animated content, but it’s grainy and choppy. Add that to the limited color support and whatever you watch will look like a heavily compressed animated GIF. What I can say is that I’ve been able to use the Tab Ultra sporadically, using it to edit Google Docs one day, take some handwritten notes on another and even pop on a YouTube video, and in roughly a week and a half I’ve only managed to whittle the battery down to 30%, which is impressive in comparison to a traditional Android tablet. A5-sized) Kaleido 3 screen with monochrome resolution of 1860×2480 (300dpi) and colour resolution of 930×1240 (150dpi)
