About this deal

The 'so I thought bit' - Doog is having a problem with his induction hob, his (magnetic) frying pan works fine but his matching smaller (magnetic) saucepan doesn't. So this morning we tried a test - I have a small pan that we knew works find on my Vango induction hob (we cooked dinner with it Saturday) so we tried that on Doogs - it doesn't work. We think there must be a pan sensor circuit and it is triggered by pans of a certain dimension and Doog's small pan, like mine is too small for his hob. Jon has suggested we try the pan off-centre to see if we can work out where the sensor is and whether that would a) fool it and b) still heat effectively.

The overall dimensions are comparable to other 2-burner camping stoves, which means it should fit camp kitchens. Value for money: Is the performance of the product and its various features consistent with the price? Ease of use: We looked for practical, straightforward and intuitive hobs. Any elements that felt overcomplicated or in any way confusing meant the hob was marked down.

doog if you know the maker and model of your combined gas/induction hob I'll go online and look for a manual and see what it has to say

Not cheap compared with suitcase stoves and other gas jobs, however it offers an alternative means of cooking, and I believe there is a market for it. I do not know what it is like to use, and the low wattage for both hobs concerns me. However I am a big fan of induction cooking, and have a Thetford 2-burner hob in my van as I do not like to use LPG in canisters and bottles. Currently I have no plan to cook outside except for BBQs, however, you have just given me an idea, and I already have a 2kW single induction hob that I can take with me in the van. One would need to source suitable pots and pans for it, which is not too much of an issue for saucepans and I would strongly recommend Tefal Ingenio for its space-saving design. Their smallest frying pan is 22cm which should be fine with this hob.Vango's double induction hob, 2 x 800W per hob, 1.6kW total power, suitable of pan from 12 to 21cm, is designed for outdoor use according to their product information.

If I were new to camping under canvas and in need to an induction hob, then I would probably buy one of these, plus a set of Tefal Ingenio pots and pans.Cost to run: We asked whether the induction hob was costly or relatively cheap to run based on our 10 minute pasta-boiling test.
