About this deal

What you need to know: The odds are against you from the start in Pandemic, but that's the beauty of it. This co-op epic is never less than thrilling, and it doesn't feel hopeless either. Despite being tasked with curing a clutch of super-diseases, good communication (not to mention the ability to think on your feet) will see you through. Want satisfying cooperative board games for your collection? This should be at the top of the pile. Wingspan is a surprise favorite when it comes to adult board games. Besides being the winner of a well-respected Spiel des Jahres award, it's popular enough that some cheeky retailers charged triple its list price when it went out of print a few years ago. That tells you more than enough about its quality. Sounds easy? Far from it. Not only must the clue-giver avoid words that could be associated with the enemy team’s agent codenames, but they must never say anything that could lead their teammates to select the assassin codename – if they do, it’s game over. Being one of the guessers is a little easier but not much, as you never know what your spymaster is thinking. Everyone’s minds work in different ways and clues that seem logical to the clue-giver might lead you in a totally different direction. Q: Why won't you add rule-variations/replayable-games/any-other-feature? It would make the game much better. Ragnarök is coming! The end of the world is nigh and it is your job to steer your Viking clan through battles to secure your place in eternal Valhalla. As you’d expect, there’s more than a smattering of pillaging, warfare and cunning tactics as you upgrade and develop your clan, and as the game moves through its three phases, you’ll receive help from mythical Norse creatures and fight other players for precious tokens.

Others may prefer something simpler like Betrayal at House on the Hill, though. That sort of 'hobby' board game is very replayable, and gets better every time as you learn its quirks. What is the most popular board game in 2023? What you need to know: Ever wonder how long you'd last in a horror movie? Betrayal at House on the Hill lets you find out. Setting players loose in a haunted mansion that's quite literally out to get them, it's drenched with tension. It's also unpredictable enough that you're never sure what's going to happen next. Sure, not all of the scenarios are created equal. But if you're hunting down something more mature in terms of both narrative and gameplay, this is one of the top board games for adults.

Wingspan

Games that can accommodate both two players and many players are ideal. While family-friendly games may be designed for more players so all the kids can get involved, many board games for adults are meant to be fun and competitive with as few as two players. Of course, there are party-style games that are great for a crowd, but if it’s just you and a friend playing, choose one of the options built to challenge groups of two. Our favorite two-player game, Patchwork, is perfect for date night, while What Do You Meme? can accommodate up to 20 players. You don't have patience for complex rules: Villainous takes a hot minute to get your head around, and if you aren't willing to invest time in learning how it works, you won't enjoy it. Stay away if strategy games aren't your jam.

On the face of it, everyone's goal is the same; set up five colonies on rival planets. That's where any common ground ends, though. Players will take command of one of 50 possible alien species, and they all boast unique abilities that upend the rules in creative ways. Some can only win battles if they lose the fight first. Others are able to reverse card numbers so 17 becomes 71. Yet more can sneak a look at someone else's cards. In other words? Expect the unexpected - and be ready to counter it. You don't like randomness: This game relies on randomly-drawn board tiles and cards that'll dictate what happens next. If this kind of unpredictability doesn't appeal, Betrayal probably isn't for you.

Coup

Gameplay: Pandemic's balance of risk and reward keeps it at the top spot as one of the best board games overall. Is it better to keep disease levels down so that they don't spread from city to city in the short term, or should you play the long game and go all-in on developing cures? There's no right answer.
