About this deal

Maquis effects during the Plan phase often help you navigate this lack of information, for example by flipping an Enemy face-up, or ready you for the worst by letting you draw extra cards or similar. For me there’s a small but meaningful disconnect between the exaggerated tone of the art and the real history that the gameplay is intended to evoke.

Some 40+ years and a couple of thousand different games played later, I don’t really qualify as a wargamer any more.Let’s be clear – this is what happens when you put a risk-taking maniac in charge of the resistance who sends out his Maquis one time too many… or is successful at completing missions but manages to get a bunch of civilians killed. More and more effort was made by Franco’s government to crush the Maquis that ultimately ended the resistance roughly 25 years after it began. It’s steeped in the setting, providing plenty of historical context and wonderful touches, most notably the familiarity of your guerilla maquis.

It can be very important to eliminate military units – or, at the very least, eliminate key units that can potentially cause you to lose not only the mission but the game. I have figured out over the years that I am more interested in the story a game tells then the challenge it presents to me. Unfortunately, revealed Maquis are removed from your deck, and you likely won't be able to use them for the rest of the game. You will know how many points that you have scored and there is a table ion the rulebook which ranks you based non your score. I have had mixed reviews on most of them but I found that Resist was engaging and something I was more than happy to play game after game. From 1936 to 1939, as the rise of fascism in Europe was accelerating, Spain was riven by a civil war between the combined leftist forces known as the Republicans and a collection of right-wing groups fighting under the banner of the Nationalists.

You are an investor who teams up and creates a company with one of the exciting, visionary inventors. The player starts with a deck of 12 Maquis, either randomly chosen from the available 24 or drafted at setup using a simple “flip two, keep one” method. You better hope you don’t reveal a Guard who you must defeat before you can even attempt the mission. There is also a lot of replayability in the box, both with the fact you don’t use all of the cards and then there is also a scenario book which I have not even touched on yet. Perhaps the most pressing are the deadly Counter-Guerillas, who eliminate innocent Civilians if left undefeated; lose too many Civilians and the Maquis must abandon the fight. The deck also includes three unplayable Spy cards, which clog up the deck and can potentially lead to a loss if the player ever draws a hand with only Spies.

There is one misprinted card in the original version – Adolfo’s hidden side should be a zero value rather than 2. But the threat of spy cards, which effectively do nothing but clog up your deck, are always in your mind. Spain, 1936: General Franco and his troops advance through the territories of Spain, giving way to a long period of civil war and repression.

There are mission cards with defense and garrison values, as well as effects and points once defeated. You know how many there will be; you just don’t know whether that lurking threat is a puny Guard or something more dangerous. is also just a couple of decks of cards which I love to have as a solo game, although it is not quite as portable as it could have been (more on that later). To be successful you need to make sure that you pick the right moment to use the revealed side of your characters, as every time you do, your deck is likely to get smaller and smaller.
