About this deal

It doesn’t have any screws, or even pushpins, like most bracelets, so sizing it can be extremely difficult. The rich, dark dial juxtaposed against the pronounced bezel of the bright, polished case really packs a punch. It keeps decent time, it can take a beating for years and years without needing a service and is extremely affordable.

I do appreciate craftsmanship and inginuity of many Swiss pieces, but like you said, as far as reliability and affordability, Seiko is hard to beat. I’m not even completely sure it was an official Seiko model, or someone just modified a previous existing Seiko with the SNXS79 dial, but I love it all the same. One thing I don’t like about the back is the fact of placing the technical markings on the underside of the crystal. I also wasn’t a fan of the all polished case of the SNXS79, and how easily the mineral crystal smudged up and looked ‘dirty’ from fingerprint smudges all the time (little did I know, sapphire crystals can be WORSE about this sometimes). In case any rumors might have unsettled you, rest assured – the SNXS models aren’t a homage to anything.

While I don’t mind the way it works as long as it works, if you’re unable to settle for lack of added security, you’ll be better off swapping this bracelet for something else. Even if the resemblance is striking, Seiko has nevertheless managed to give the SNXS79 its own unique character. In my opinion, the 79 is the most ‘rich’ and ‘luxurious’ looking, though the blue version looks good also. The weekday and date window on the SNXS79 comes with a polished frame, and the display itself features a white background that contrasts beautifully with the dark dial.

However, I’ve seen people submerge – even swim with – these watches, so I presume that it’s relatively safe to expose them to water. The dial itself is a dark anthracite color with a subtle sunburst finish, which makes the dial look gray or black and tinted with green, depending on the light. Seiko usually understates its cases' water resistance, so even if you forget to remove it when going for a swim, the watch should be fine, so long as you aren’t scuba diving or doing laps. That’s when I did some more digging, to find an automatic watch that was affordable, looked great and had solid build quality. It also has a day and a date wheel, and a display caseback so you can see the movement through the underside of the watch.

Back in 1983, my grandfather was working on a contract in Iraq – the state-owned electric company that he worked for was contracted by Siemens to modernize power lines in and around Baghdad. A considerable advantage of this one is Seiko’s Magic Lever bidirectional winding system, first introduced in 1959. But since it's a simple push/pull crown (rather than a screw-down crown), the SNXS79 is only water-resistant to 30 m (3 bar, 98 ft), and thus only protected against the occasional splash. As most 5s are, the SNXS79 is equipped with an all-brushed, folded link bracelet with hollow end links, held together by flat pins. The good news is, there is clearly no shortage of Seiko 5s to choose from, and even if the SNXS79 doesn’t do it for you, there are plenty of other expensive-looking Seiko 5s to choose from.Heck, James Bond wore a NATO strap much smaller than the lug width of his Rolex Submariner in some of his movies. The more expensive variants are watches with the reference number SNXS79J1, which are JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) models, produced and sold only in Japan.
