About this deal

Kids & Children» Personal & Social Issues» Learning about Racism, Discrimination & Multiculturalism for Children & Teenagers This book warmed my heart and reminded me of Wonder in different ways. It talks about refugees, their struggles and their lives, in such a way which can be easily understood by kids. The author has done a really good job, in world-building. He told an important story which shows the real face of many societies without overburdening kids. Please note that this is a World Book Day 2020 special which is no longer available to buy new and used copies may be hard to come by. This is a wonderful readalike to Wonder. I love the messages of having the courage to stand up to bullies and the importance of being an ally for people in need. ❤️❤️ Unfortunately even though this book is extremely important and was really beautiful, I can't give a rating to it because of the author's attitude when it comes to trans people, especially trans women.

Rauf's touching debut could hardly be more topical. Syrian refugee Ahmet is struggling to adapt to his new life in London, until our nine-year-old narrator and friends come up with a very clever plan to reunite him with his lost family. Utterly delightful, Rauf's book centres on the importance of friendship and encourages children not to fear those who are different'. * The Mail On Sunday *I really liked this book because I never read a book about refugees before so that was new to me. I really liked the characters. They are super funny! I was really worried because there is this kid from Syria named Ahmet in third grade, just like me, but he doesn’t know English, lost his dad, lost his mom, his cat is dead AND no one knows what happened to his sister! But then I learned the truth: Ahmet really isn't very strange at all. He's a refugee who's run away from a War. A real one. With bombs and fires and bullies that hurt people. And the more I find out about him, the more I want to help. But recently it feels like no one believes me about anything – even when I’m telling the truth! And it’s only gotten worse since I played a prank on the old man who lives in the park.

recommend. It's beautiful. Just finished this book with my 10 year old son and we both loved it, it is now "our book". It's funny, thought-provoking, kind and it presents many lessons about today's world and how kindness, friendship and avoiding stereotypes is so important. Highly recommended and look forward to reading again with my youngest. Will be a great film soon! Just finished this beautiful book with my 8 year old son, it is funny, extremely moving and thought provoking. We read it over several nights and I shed happy and sad tears! A wonderful read for children and adults alike I know it is middle grade but I’ll recommend it to all the grown-ups. It is never late to read a thing or two about Humanity from a child perspective. Humanity isn’t that complicated if you’ll try to make things simple. This book is filled with all those small acts of kindness which seem small but can make a huge impact.

Our narrator and her friends come up with a plan to reunite Ahmet with his family, and this leads all of them into a very big adventure. But would a gaggle of nine-year-olds write to Queen Elizabeth to ask her to support Ahmet and be naive enough to expect a reply? I loved that the mom and MC had (Extra) Special Adventures. Meaning they had a whole day to do all sorts of things, whatever the MC would like to do. From finding a special fruit to getting stationery and other stuff for school. It was just the sweetest thing, especially since mom worked so much due to dad dying years and years ago.

obviously the writing is catered for kids so you can expect that. But with this one honestly I didn't really feel that. Utterly delightful. Centres on the importance of friendship and encourages children not to fear those who are different.’ Kids & Children» Children, Teenagers & Young Adults (YA) Fiction» School Stories for Children & TeenagersIt was heartwarming listening to their discussions about refugees, they were very empathetic and sympathetic towards the refugee boy in the book. In a post-apocalyptic future, war between tribes seems inevitable but there is just a chance that siblings Kara and Joe might be able to stop it.

Though some adults and a teacher behave in a bigoted, unsupportive way, the openhearted, helpful adults support the kids in their efforts to help Ahmet and other refugees. The narrator's [arents are seen as smart, admirable, loving and wise. The narrator's Uncle Lenny brings food when there's not enough, and is emotionally supportive. This is a good book about a boy who meets a refugee child. He wants to help him find his family. They bring him treats after school. The friends find out that the gates are closing and that no one else will be allowed into the country. The friends ask the Queen to keep the gates open… This is a non-fiction piece of writing linked to Syria. Your class will read the extract and answer the questions to learn more about the overall picture of Syria, the climate, the civil war, refugees and more. The author wrote the kids really well. Sometimes with children's books the kids don't come across as the age that is mentioned, but these kids were their age. The second reading task is to write a recount of the events of playtime, from both of the character’s points of view, switching between them both.
