About this deal

Much like its predecessor, Undaunted: North Africa presents us with the tight gameplay and meaningful strategic decisions that make conflict fun and accessible. If you’re looking for a war game that lets you make real decisions in less than 40 minutes, then there’s nowhere better to start. Estimated Battle Casualties during the Normandy Invasion on June 6, 1944: https://www. britannica. com/ story/ estimated-battle-casualties-during-the-normandy-invasion-on-june-6-1944 Trevor Benjamin and David Thompson’s 2018 breakthrough War Chest was wargaming boiled down to its basics: the chess like tradition of carefully manoeuvring units and planning moves to take your opponent’s pieces combined with modern additions of asymmetrical player armies and bag-building to determine the actions available each turn.

For the second player, go through the same system. If their initiative card is higher, then they get to start the next turn. PYF wrote: I have a question though: how easy is it to solo the game? I bought it yesterday after seeing it listed on BGG as 1-2 players (I have nobody up for playing it with me, sadly), but then discovered there's no official solo variant. We're dug down in good cover squares, shooting away, trying to clear a path to those objectives. All we're doing is drawing cards and rolling dice, but the hope inherent in every action is like a drug. Drawing and cursing. Rolling and cheering. Neither of us cares that nothing is moving. How long can the game sustain us in this camouflage? So every scenario is inspired by a real scenario, but we are not trying to recreate that scenario accurately. And similarly, if you know about the structure of a platoon, and you’re playing the game like ‘Wow, there’s the correct number of riflemen in the squad’, you should be able to see those things. But you certainly shouldn’t need to know those things to play it. We will always err on the side of making it a good game before anything else. DT: I think Guide is the only action that you can take to help your partner’s units. Otherwise, you can’t control their units. Most units can only move onto a tile if it has been explored by Scouts (designated by the bincoulars token). Units in green, meanwhile, have been suppressed by that machine gunner on the riverbank.

Had my regular Cthulhu Wars crew over today. We usually try to start with something else (we've been playing a fair amount of Tiny Epic Crimes lately) and when talking about a couple other games, I... There are very few war games that really bring the brutality of war to life. In most war games, players are distanced from the death and suffering of people and Undaunted: Normandy is no different. Removing cards from play or taking tokens off the board doesn’t convey any sense of someone losing their life. Fog of WarEverything you loved about Undaunted: Normandy is here, with polish, and a sprinkle of novel new features. There are few war games that are accessible while remaining ‘truly’ a war game. This one is nearly perfect, and with enough community scenarios in the future, might be the only one you need. PLAY IT? MUST-PLAY Half of me it so absorbed by this that I want to try again and see if it works, see if there's a German counterpoint to work against it. The other half wants to try the other eleven scenarios in the book. That part wins. So I take it to a friend's house to play the third scenario. This involves a river, and for the first time, the sheer simplicity of Undaunted: Normandy disappoints. There are no special terrain effects for the water: it's mere decoration and it feels wrong. David Thompson: For the eight new scenarios we’re adding, you can play each of those two-player or four-player. But the solo play is a little bit out of control. It’s literally every single scenario from Normandy, every single scenario from North Africa, plus the eight new scenarios. And you can play each one as either side [US vs. Germans, or Italians vs. British]. So there’s 62 ways to play solo, and every one of those is tailored to the scenario. Undaunted Normandy is a 2 player, platoon level, light war game from Osprey Games. It’s set following the Allied landings in Normandy in 1944 and pits German and US troops across 12 scenarios. Each scenario lasting about an hour during which the two sides vie to control key objective points and fulfil the victory conditions of the scenario.

Perhaps I was just used to playing a campaign of Undaunted with a friend which meant I had adapted to their tactics and strategies but I felt that this offered a whole new set of challenges and puzzles for me to solve. Also, as an interesting thematic note, each card in a set is visually similar but distinct. All riflemen are in the same pose, for example, but each card in that set has a unique name and face. When your riflemen token takes a hit, and you remove a card permanently, you’re always looking at an individual. It’s a nice touch. There’s two main ways to do war on the tabletop. Many like to attempt a simulation. Hundreds of tokens or miniatures, rules for every part of the conflict from reloading to morale, and a sense of a complete machine being turned by your hand. The other is abstraction, focusing on the broad strokes and, in truth, getting to the most meaningful parts of conflict.
