About this deal

Christophe Gans' "Brotherhood of the Wolf" (2001) arrives on 4K Blu-ray/Blu-ray courtesy of StudioCanal. The English for French is a little more accurate (judging from my limited handle on the language), but the English SDH, because it does include audio descriptors, is a little tighter but the words used read a little more elegant.

The werewolf movie has seemingly gone the way of the shark movie in recent times, retelling similar stories over and over, and relying on cheap CGI for its effects, and for many the genre has never really gotten past the double-whammy of An American Werewolf in London and The Howling way back in 1981 as the bar against all others shall be measured. The box set has an extensive selection of archival bonus features that were originally made available on various DVD releases of Brotherhood of the Wolf. Behind the Scenes - this archival program takes a closer look at the production of Brotherhood of the Wolf.

He also talks of the problems faced during the shoot and waxes philosophical about his work and that of French and genre cinema in general. Subtitles are a vast improvement over Scream’s controversial first Blu-ray without the gaps or outright stupid titles like “speaking foreign,” - none of that is there. Note - there are three different cuts of Brotherhood of the Wolf, the original 143 minute French theatrical cut (also shown in the US) which was reluctantly created by Christophe Gans upon theatrical release because any longer and the film would suffer from reduced numbers of showings and an intermission; the UK hybrid cut, and the original French 151 minute 'director's cut, the last of which is the primary focus here, and really the best of all different cuts - it was the version Gans originally wanted to release at the cinemas after all. Sylvia’s intentions are not clear though and being with her causes Fronsac to experience some frightening dreams.

Updated daily and in real-time, we track all high-def disc news and release dates, and review the latest disc titles. An aged master has been used on all releases up until now, and I’m very eager to report that this is absolutely the best the film has ever looked. The first half keeps things simple and this works in its favour, because the film, in essence, is something best appreciated at surface value. Ultimately, I found the insertion of strong cyan and other regrading work throughout the film quite distracting and damaging, which is extremely frustrating because the 4K files are very, very strong. Philip Kwok’s choreography is remarkably good for a non-HK production, utilising a lot of acrobatic moves and weapon combat.

Compared to Scream Factor’s previous Blu-ray and the other discs that navigated the globe over the years, Studiocanal’s new 4K restoration didn’t have much to compete against. Those highly stylized sequences that ape bullet-time effects used in The Matrix look better than ever, with gorgeous textures, a nice and delicate layer of film grain, plus those old CGI effects are much better blended into the overall picture than in previous presentations. I enjoyed the film a lot back then but, for whatever reason, haven’t revisited it for a long time since those first couple of viewings. The box set introduces a brand new 4K restoration of the Director's Cut of Brotherhood of the Wolf, which can be seen in native 4K and 1080p, that was completed at Hiventy in France and endorsed by Christophe Gans. Originally filmed in 35mm and scanned in 2K 8-bit in the early 2000s, Brotherhood was never particularly well handled on home formats, and so when Hiventy picked it up for 4K remastering, it required a full overhaul, with the 35mm film reels scanned as 16-bit DPX ADX files, with the film's original editor Sebastien Prangere, and it's original colourist, Jean-René Nebot, brought in to help best perfect the feature in 4K with the new technology of Dolby Vision HDR to play with. Currently, the only Blu-ray release with the Director's Cut of the film is the one French distributors Studio Canal produced in 2008).
