About this deal

Although not quite hagiography, Robert Ross’s biography of Marty Feldman is too fawning to be anything other than a big old fan letter to its subject.

Acclaimed author Robert Ross has interviewed Marty's friends and family, including his sister Pamela, Tim Brooke-Taylor, Michael Palin and Terry Jones, and also draws from extensive, previously unpublished and often hilarious interviews with Marty himself, taped in preparation for the autobiography he never wrote. In 1954, Feldman met Barry Took while both were working as performers, and with Took, he eventually formed an enduring writing partnership which lasted until 1974. No one has ever made me laugh as hard as Marty Feldman in Young Frankenstein, he was pure comic perfection. Don’t praise absolutely everything, don’t try and force your view of Marty’s genius into the reader’s face, and please, please don’t believe every anecdote a comedian repeats on a chat show couch. Feldman wrote an autobiography, Eye Marty: the newly discovered autobiography of a comic genius, which was brought to light following Lauretta's death. Feldman created a number of immensely successful and influential shows, and was one of the most essential creative forces in British comedy embodied also by his close friends and creative partners from Beyond The Fringe (especially Peter Cook and Dudley Moore) and Monty Python (especially John Cleese, Graham Chapman and Eric Idle).

If you read his books in isolation, you'd believe that each of his subjects was the biggest mega- celebrity going! The Chalke History Festival announces a new name, new look, and tons for history buffs to get their teeth into! Like so many other people who ended up in the performing arts, he was evidently a neurotic all his life. The autobiography is perhaps better appreciated if read in conjunction with Robert Ross's fine biography of the performer. Published exactly as Feldman had left it, there are some passages which seem a tad scatological: perhaps collaborating with an editor would have helped finesse the work in places, but that rawness does lend great emotional gravitas when we reach the end of the book and realise that he had so many exciting projects he was working of when the heart attack took him from us.

I thought this would be an interesting story but it's gotten into tedious details of his television writing career that I'm not interested in. Towards the end of the book he gets more reflective about politics, religion and the absurdities of life. Yes, Marty Feldman was a very funny man, but I’m not convinced that he was the timeless legend this biography makes him out to be. How odd to publish an autobiography — and it is an autobiography, not a ghosted effort — 33 years after your death. Per non parlare delle fughe verso Parigi, all’epoca città simbolo per artisti ed intellettuali, alla ricerca di qualcosa che non riusciva a trovare tra recitazione e musica jazz. From his youth as a tramp on the streets of London, to the height of his fame in America – where he encountered everyone from Orson Welles to Kermit the Frog, before his Hollywood dream became a nightmare – this is the fascinating story of a key figure in the history of comedy, fully told for the first time.

And Marty's teenage years were extraordinary, as he discusses being homeless for almost a decade, drift from job to job while often sleeping in parks. E anche la giacca e i pantaloni finivano con te sotto le lenzuola se volevi ritrovarli la mattina successiva.
